Sikar (Rajasthan) Election 2019: Will Congress's Subhash Maharia be able to outperform sitting MP Sumedhanand?

The Sikar Lok Sabha constituency goes to polls in the fifth phase of the general elections on May 6. The Congress has fielded Subhash Maharia from the seat while the Bharatiya Janata Party has chosen Sumedhanand Saraswati and the CPM would be represented by Antra Ram. The constituency has a total population of 1,507,740 with 798,057 males and 709,683 females.

The seat was formed before the 1952 Lok Sabha elections.

Sikar is one of the 25 Lok Sabha seats from the state. The constituency is divided into eight Assembly segments.

In 2014, Sumedhanand Saraswati of the BJP had defeated his Congress rival by a margin of 2,39,196 votes or 22.4 percent votes.

The state of Rajasthan is dominated by the two national parties BJP and the Congress with some other marginal parties like CPM and the BSP who enjoy some influence in few pockets of the state adding to the list of important players in the state.

A good performance in Rajasthan would be crucial for both the BJP and the Congress as the Congress had fared really poorly in the last Lok Sabha election while the BJP had put up a really Impressive performance and any significant deflection from their last performances can have huge implications on the overall tally of both the national parties.

Last time the BJP had swept Rajasthan by totally uprooting the Congress and bagged all the 25 Lok Sabha seats of the state.

The results will be out on May 23.
