Skies Clear Up Over Mumbai; Heavy Rain to Persist in Kolhapur, Thane, Pune

After getting healthy rainfall of 54 mm on Monday, Mumbai’s suburbs are predicted to get only light to moderate rains on Tuesday. However, heavy rains are expected to continue in isolated parts of neighbouring Thane district, which got nearly 68 mm rainfall yesterday.

For Tuesday, the IMD has predicted heavy rain (60-100 mm) at isolated places in the Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra subdivisions.

Within Konkan, the heavy rainfall is predicted for Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, and within Madhya Maharashtra for Pune, Kolhapur and Satara.

However, both Kolhapur and Sangli received only light rain on Monday. According to IMD data, Kolhapur received 4.3 mm rain on Monday (up to Tuesday morning 8.30 am), and Sangli merely 1 mm. The reduction in rain since Sunday would have come as a relief to people in those regions. However, major dams like the Koyna, Radhanagari and Warna were still discharging water on Monday, so things are not yet fully back to 'normal' for residents of Sangli and Kolhapur yet.

In other parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Pune received just over 3 mm rainfall on Monday, while Satara recorded around 2 mm. Both Konkan/Goa and Madhya Maharashtra have received over 50% surplus rain this monsoon (as on September 9, 2019), while Marathwada as a subdivision faces a 19% shortfall. Vidarbha has received 4% more rain over the average for this period.
