SRN docs perform surgery on accident victim, save life

Prayagraj: A team of doctors at SRN Hospital saved the life of a 42-year-old critically wounded accident victim through a complex surgery to connect the small intestine with the large.

Medically, this surgical procedure is known as an exploratory laparotomy with resection and anastomosis, said Dr Santosh Singh, a surgeon at the hospital’s trauma centre, while speaking to TOI.

The patient, Aftab of Badhohi, was brought to the hospital with multiple injuries following a road accident on April 24. His right arm was fractured, and he had sustained severe abdominal injuries. Initial examination revealed significant internal bleeding in the abdomen and low blood pressure. He also experienced breathing difficulties, said Singh.

“The case was discussed with the head of the department of surgery, Dr VK Pandey. Following this, the emergency team and anesthesia department decided to operate on the patient,” said Singh. During surgery, the team found that about 5ft of small intestine was extensively damaged and irreparable. As a result, they removed the damaged portion and reconnected the remaining part of the small intestine with the large intestine, he added.

Santosh Singh led a team of doctors that included Dr Atre Saha, Dr Sarvesh Mishra, Dr Harsh, and Dr Deepak.

Given the patient’s critical condition after post-surgery, he was placed on a ventilator in the ICU under the supervision of Dr Neelam Singh, head of the anesthesia department. After two days, the patient’s condition began to improve significantly, and he was discharged from the hospital five days later.
