Stalin hands over cheque of ₹75L to grandmaster Gukesh

Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Sunday handed over a cheque of 75 lakh to 17-year-old chess grandmaster D Gukesh for winning FIDE Candidates trophy.

Gukesh, with his parents, met the chief minister at the camp office in Chennai where Stalin gave him the cheque and wished him success in the upcoming World Chess Championship match against Chinese grandmaster Ding Liren.

Sharing the message on X, Stalin said Gukesh surprised the entire world by winning the Candidates tournament at a very young age. Stalin also asked youngsters to engage themselves in a sport of their choice along with studies.

Stalin also appreciated sports minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and state sports department for encouraging sportspersons and creating achievers.

Upon receiving the cheque, Gukesh thanked Tamil Nadu govt for their continued support to sportspersons and also thanked Udhayanidhi for his continuous encouragement through Special Scholarship for Elite Sportspersons Scheme.
