Sunday classes irk students in Dharwad

HUBBALLI: It’s second consecutive Sunday that children are attending the school in Dharwad and many other districts in state. Recent rains and floods have taken away their jolly break as holidays were declared in the schools and colleges during calamity.

Many students feel it’s stressful to attend the classes while parents are also feel tired of sending their wards on Sundays.

Many admit that it was inevitable due to calamity, but they also suggest running school during Dasara holidays. Meanwhile, psychiatrists are terming that restless teaching won’t give fruitful results in terms of children's growth.

“As he attended the school on August 18, he is now totally denying to attend the school. We are also not interested in sending him to school on this Sunday,” said Basavaraj Manikatti, whose son is studying in Class 1 at KE Board Central School in Dharwad.

Mayur Patil, a private employee, asserted that he used to take up some work for his son, who is student of Parivartan Gurukul Heritage School. “Every Sunday I used to cut his nails and take him to Tolanakere or Nrupatunga Hills in the morning for refreshment. Now he has no time for refreshment. It’s true that there is need of running schools to compensate holidays declared during calamity, but they could be adjusted by reducing Dasara holidays” he opined.

Ravi Hadapad, a barber, observed that many parents bring their children for hair cutting on Sundays. “But none had brought children last Sunday. Some of our customers said children have no holiday” he added. Umesh Talikoti, a parent asserted that he was supposed to take his son to barber last Sunday but has deferred it due to continuous school days. “His hair is growing longer and looking indecent” he said.

Dharwad DDPI Gajanan Mannikeri said that it was inevitable to run schools to make up the syllabus. “We have ordered all government and private schools to work full day on three Saturdays, instead of half day. And also to run schools on two Sundays-one on Aug 18 another on Aug 25” he explained.
