T20 World Cup: Decoding batters with 80-plus scores versus India
04 May 2024

India will aim to end their drought for an ICC trophy in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will get underway on June 1 with West Indies and USA being the hosts.

The team has been away from the T20 WC title since tasting glory in the inaugural edition in 2007.

Here we decode batters with 80-plus scores versus India in T20 WCs.

Jos Buttler - 80* in Adelaide, 2022
#4

England did not break a sweat while chasing 169 against India in the semi-final of the 2022 event at the Adelaide Oval.

Openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales were equally brilliant.

While Buttler played the second fiddle at the start, he changed gears toward the end.

He returned unbeaten on 80 off 49 balls (4s: 4, 6s: 7) as England won by 10 wickets.

Lendl Simmons - 82* in Mumbai, 2016

#3

It was the semi-final of the 2016 competition as West Indies needed to chase 193 at the Wankhede Stadium.

Though WI lost two early wickets, Lendl Simmons rescued them with a breathtaking knock.

He smashed a match-winning 82*(51), a knock laced with seven boundaries and five maximums.

WI hence claimed a memorable seven-wicket triumph.

Alex Hales - 86* in Adelaide, 2022
#2

Buttler wasn't the only one who tormented India in the 2022 semi-final game in Adelaide.

Hales was also sensational on the day as his 47-ball 86* helped England win by 10 wickets with four overs to spare.

He hammered four boundaries and seven sixes during his stay.

Hales and Buttler's 170-run stand in the game is the highest T20 WC partnership to date.

Chris Gayle - 98 in Bridgetown, 2010
#1

Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle was unfortunate to have missed out on his second T20 WC ton in the 2010 game against India in Bridgetown.

The left-handed batter was at his aggressive best as he made 98 off 66 balls. He smoked five boundaries and seven maximums before getting run-out.

Nevertheless, his efforts meant WI posted 169/6 and later won by 14 runs.
