Tamil Nadu reports 117 deaths, 5,890 fresh COVID-19 infections

Chennai: Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 5,890 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the count to 3,26,245, while 117 fatalities pushed the death toll to 5,514, the health department said.

As many as 5,556 people have been discharged today after recovery taking the total number of recoveries to 2,67,015 till date.

The number of active cases including those in isolation was 53,716, a health department bulletin said.

Chennai, which has been reporting less than 1,000 new infections over the last few days, recorded 1,187 new cases today, pushing the cumulative total to 1,14,260.

The city reached a peak in fresh infections on a single day reporting 2,392 new cases on June 30, while it registered a decline with 984 people contracting the disease on August 7 and maintained the trend over the past few days.

Since August 3, the state has been reporting fatalities in three digits.

Between August 3 and 14, the number of those who died due to the virus was 1,382 in the state.

With testing being ramped up, 70,153 samples were tested by government authorised and privately run laboratories today, totalling to 35,69,453.

Among the new infections reported today, 28 of them were returnees, the bulletin said.

Besides Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet collectively saw the number of infections going up by 1,247.

Ranipet, Thirupathur, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi recorded a total of 653 new cases, while Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Kanyakumari logged 1,028.

While Thiruvallur (495) saw the second highest number of new cases after Chennai, Krishnagiri recorded the lowest number of 12 today.
