Telangana bypolls: Race for TPCC president post hots up after Huzurnagar defeat

HYDERABAD: The race for the post of the president of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee has intensified after the party’s defeat in Huzurnagar Assembly by-poll.

TPCC president and Nalgonda MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy informed the AICC leadership that he is willing to step down. Uttam, who went to Delhi immediately after the results of Huzurnagar bypoll were declared, met Sonia Gandhi and submitted a report on the bypoll result and the state of affairs in Telangana.

However, the party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi did not discuss steps to overhaul the TPCC or any proposal to change the guard in Telangana. The AICC is in two minds whether to allow Uttam to continue until municipal elections are completed in Telangana or immediately make major changes in the TPCC.

“Actually, Uttam offered to resign immediately after the party’s drubbing in December 2018 assembly polls, but the AICC leadership has not given any indications of changing the leadership in Telangana so far,” a senior AICC leader told TOI. However, a section of leaders who have been gunning for TPCC chief’s post said the party leadership in Delhi has started the process of identifying ‘efficient leaders’ who can revive the party and bring it back to power in the next elections.

TPCC working president A Revanth Reddy, Bhuvanagiri MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, MLC T Jeevan Reddy, MLA D Sridhar Babu are prominent candidates for the post.
