The Responder star Martin Freeman's life off screen - age-gap partner, net worth and famous ex

Gritty crime series The Responder is back and Martin Freeman will be gracing our screens with his impressive scouse accent.

The English actor, most famous for his roles in The Hobbit and The Office, is worth a fortune thanks to his roles in Hollywood blockbusters - and his ex-partner is just as famous. Martin, 52, was in a relationship with actress

Amanda Abbington for 16 years after they met on the set of film Men Only in 2000.

The couple went onto star in several shows together, most memorably BBC One's mystery crime drama Sherlock, which ran for four series. They also co-starred in The Debt, The Robinsons and The Good Night.

Martin and Amanda, 52, have two teenage children together, Joe and Grace and split up in 2016. In a 2021 Instagram Live session, the actress spoke of her fears about the impact breaking up would have on their son and daughter. "I'm sure I've given them irreparable damage and they will be going to therapy because of me and Martin at some point," she said. "That's what I am striving for and what Martin strives for as well — to create a place where they're not hiding anything."

In an interview with the Financial Times, Martin candidly said he would always love the mother of his children. "I'm not with Amanda anymore," said The Office star back in 2016. "It's very, very amicable — I'll always love Amanda." Amanda agreed, telling The Times in 2018 of their co-parenting: "We still get on really well, we still really both admire each other as actors... he's a great guy, but we just couldn't live with each other any more."

The couple have both moved on since their break-up - Amanda is engaged to former stuntman Jonathan Goodwin and Martin went public with his romance with French actress Rachel Mariam in 2021, when they hit the red carpet together at the Raindance Film Festival. Rachel, who at 29 is more than two decades younger than the actor, starred in BBC Three hit Normal People and is a talented writer too.

Martin is known for The Hobbit trilogy, in which he starred as Bilbo Baggins and for playing Everett K. Ross in Marvel movies including Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War. The star also played the lead in season one of American comedy drama Fargo. He is worth an estimated £15 million, mostly due to his work in Hollywood.

Martin and Amanda, who weren't married but called themselves husband and wife when they were together, hit the headlines over their finances back in 2013, when it emerged the actress had declared herself bankrupt over a £120,000 tax bill. "Amanda has done nothing legally wrong but I am sure Revenue & Customs officials will be fuming on missing out on her cash, especially given her common-law husband is a very successful actor," a source told The Sun.

The actor's most recent TV role has seen him play police officer Chris Carson in comedy-drama The Responder, to rave reviews. Written by former policeman Tony Schumacher, the programme depicts a cop pushed to the limit mentally on night shifts.

He is also causing a stir with film Miller's Girl, an erotic thriller which depicts an affair between a teacher and her student. The actor co-stars along actress Jenna Ortega, 21, who plays an 18-year-old high school student in the movie.
