Thrissur collector issues Orange alert following water release from Sholayar reservoir

KOCHI: Thrissur district collector has issued the second Orange alert, as the water level of the lower Sholayar dam, which is part of the Kerala Sholayar Hydroelectric Project, reached 2660.20 feet at 7 am on Saturday.

The first alert for the dam was issued when water level reached 2,658 feet. Those on the banks of the Chalakkudy river have been advised to remain vigilant in the coming days.

The rise in water level has been caused due to the release of 500 cusecs of water from the upper Sholayar reservoir in Tamil Nadu to the Kerala Sholayar dam.

Rainfall is low in this part of Kerala Sholayar. However, if the flow continues, the water level of Kerala Sholayar dam will reach 2,663 feet of full storage capacity in the coming days. As of now, the storage level is at 95 per cent.

Kerala Sholayar is likely to open when the water reaches 2,663 feet. When the water is released, it will flow to the Peringalkuthu dam. The water level at Peringalkuthu dam was 419.90m at 8 am on Saturday. Later, this water reaches Poringalkuthu reservoir and Idamalayar dam.
