Tottenham plot swap deal to land £30m Serie A ace with transfer summit 'planned'

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a swap deal involving Djed Spence, with a 'transfer summit' planned with Serie A outfit Genoa, where he's currently on loan.

The defender, who joined Spurs two years ago from Middlesbrough, has only made six appearances for the club and has been loaned out three times.

Italian source Calcio Mercato suggests that the strong ties between Tottenham and Genoa could trigger a wave of transfer activity this summer. Radu Dragusin switched sides in January for a reported £26million, while Spence was loaned to Genoa until the end of the season.

Genoa have the option to make Spence's move permanent for £8.5m after his 11 appearances for the club. However, further discussions with Spurs are expected at the season's end as Ange Postecoglou's side continue to show interest in Albert Gudmundsson.

Gudmundsson, capable of playing anywhere across the frontline, has netted 13 league goals this season, drawing attention from top European clubs like Inter Milan and Juventus. With three years remaining on his contract and Genoa in a solid financial position, they've set a £30m price tag for the 26-year-old, reports the Express.

Spurs are considering a strategic move to balance the books in line with Premier League financial regulations by potentially lowering the cost for Gudmundsson and offloading Spence's salary, as Postecoglou looks to bolster his attacking options.

Former Chelsea forward Timo Werner, who joined on a temporary deal from RB Leipzig during the January window due to Son Heung-min's international commitments and Richarlison's injury, has made a strong impression in north London. Spurs have the option to make Werner's move permanent, but it's yet to be determined if they will exercise this choice.

Ahead of a key transfer discussion with Genoa, where their sporting director Marco Ottolini is expected to participate, Spurs might show a preference for Gudmundsson over Werner. Ottolini has acknowledged the widespread interest in Genoa's standout players, including from clubs outside Italy that may have more financial power than their Serie A counterparts to secure the services of the Icelandic striker.

"Our team has players who are attracting interest," Ottolini said. "These profiles are targets for a lot of teams, which is normal. There are players who are attractive not just within the Italian transfer market, but also internationally. However. We're focusing on these last nine matches. That's what we have to do at the moment."

If Tottenham and Genoa can come to terms on a swap deal involving Gudmundsson, it could mean Spence would continue his career in Italy, thus concluding his challenging two-year stint with Spurs.
