Transport minister escapes unhurt after truck brushes past convoy

KARUR: State transport minister M R Vijayabaskar and his supporters escaped unhurt in an accident on Coimbatore- Karur Road, when a truck brushed past his car on Tuesday. The incident took place when the minister, returning from Chennai, was on his way to Karur from Coimbatore airport.


The lorry driver, identified as Sivakumar of Thanjavur , was drunk at the time, police said after inquiries.



According to police, Vijayabaskar was heading to Karur to participate in the birthday celebrations of late AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa scheduled on Tuesday at Renganathanpettai in Karur district . Earlier he had arrived at Coimbatore airport from Chennai.

"The minister's convoy was approaching K Paramathi when the truck, which was on its way to a quarry in Thennilai, brushed past the right side of the minister's car. Small blinkers fixed on the side of the car were damaged during the incident. Occupants, including the minister, escaped unhurt," a police officer said.

The minister then took another car to reach the function venue. On information, K Paramathi police conducted an inquiry and registered a case against the driver. Further investigation is on.
