Uikey launches 'School on Wheels' for displaced kids

Guwahati/Imphal: Manipur governor Anusuiya Uikey inaugurated a ‘School on Wheels’ for children displaced by the year-long ethnic strife in the state, at Bal Vidya Mandir Complex here, on Sunday. An initiative of RSS-affiliated Vidya Bharati Shiksha Vikash Samiti, the ‘School on Wheels’ is equipped with a library, computers and sports items, and will visit relief camps across the state along with a teacher.

Praising the efforts of the Samiti in ensuring continuity of education for the displaced children, Uikey urged chief secretary Vineet Joshi to extend support in increasing the number of such buses.

Currently, approximately 16,000 students are seeking refuge in 300 relief camps, mostly with their parents.

Stating that she knows the pain and sorrow of the displaced people at the relief camps, the governor said she had asked chief minister N Biren Singh and Joshi to take steps to initiate the process of permanent settlement of the displaced people.

Uikey said, “Peace is slowly returning to Manipur. People have been living in camps for the last one year. Efforts should be taken by the govt to give them a permanent place to stay. For how long will the children remain in camps? We need to take care of their educational needs and future.”

The governor commended the Samiti’s long-standing commitment to education in Manipur, operating 15 schools in six districts and 36 Sanskar Kendras in eight districts, providing free education to 150 displaced children across various districts. The Samiti has been operating in Manipur since 1979.

She underscored the significance of providing not just education, but also accommodation and essential amenities for those affected by the conflict, praising the efforts of the organisation in addressing these needs.

The inauguration ceremony marked a crucial step towards ensuring that displaced children in Manipur receive the support they need for a brighter future.
