ALLAHABAD: In a startling incident, the Kokhraj police station of Kaushambi district on Sunday turned into a wedding venue for a widow when men-in-khaki arranged her marriage with her devar( brother in-law) to bring cheerfulness into their lives.

The story began about two years back when Sunita lost her first husband Rajesh Kumar in an incident and was living at her in-laws’ house in Kokhraj.

Kakrabad resident, Sunita was married to Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Kokhraj about four years back but after the death of Rajesh, Sunita was allegedly harassed by her in-laws.

After being admitted about Sunita’s plight, her mother Parvati Devi approached Kokhraj police and submitted an application alleging that her in- laws were constantly harassing her after the death of husband. The mother also requested police officials to intervene and take out an amicable solution to the problem.

Meanwhile, Sunita too left her husband’s home about three months back and was staying with her parents.

On Sunday, the station house officer (Kokhraj) Ajeet Kumar Pandey summoned Sunita’s in-laws as well as parents at police station to take out a solution and managed to pacify both the parties to arrive an amicable solution.

The mother in-law of Sunita, Omwati agreed about Sunita's remarriage with her younger son Manjeet Kumar .

Once both the parties agreed to the proposal, a priest was summoned to perform the ceremony at the police station itself, with the thana turning into an impromptu banquet hall. As if that wasn’t enough, local musicians were then called to play some popular tunes with the family members and neighbours celebrating the marriage ceremony.

SHO Pandey told TOI “ When I asked Sunita’s mother in law to think about Sunita (widow) and what will happen to her as well as minor daughter who is also your granddaughter, the woman herself appealed to rearrange the marriage of her daughter-in-law with her younger son so that the little girl could get father’s love’.

Post the ‘wedding’, the locals also posed for a selfie with the couple.
