UP: 'Inebriated' cops assault lawyer after he objects to 'detention' of minor at midnight

Meerut: Cops from Kanker Khera Police Station in UP’s Meerut allegedly assaulted a local lawyer after the confronted them over alleged detention of his neighbour’s minor son at midnight on July 30. The affected lawyer, identified as Gaffar Khan, has suffered several injuries and a fracture in one of his hands.

Cops barge into suspect's house

Reportedly, a team of police officials, after receiving a complaint, was conducting raids in Kanker Khera area for nabbing a suspect named Imran. The police team barged into Imran’s house around midnight. The cops began detaining Imran’s minor son, following which his family started streaming. On hearing the noises, Khan, who resides in the same neighbourhood, woke up and went outside to check what was happening.

Lawyer object's to alleged detention of suspect's minor son

When Khan noticed that the cops were detaining Imran’s minor son, he confronted them. Soon, the confrontation took an ugly turn as the cops, who were allegedly in an inebriated state, began assaulting him. They let off the child and detained him and another neighbour Akhlaq after the confrontation, the lawyer told The Times of India.

Lawyer tortured after being detained

The cops allegedly tortured Khan during his detention at the police station. His family secured bail for his release on the same night. Later, the local SHO arrived at the police station and released the two detainees. The next day, Meerut Bar Association, in a written complaint to SSP Ajay Sahni, raised the issued and demanded action against the accused cops.

Sub-inspector suspended

Police stated that the accused sub-inspector has been placed under suspension after a preliminary departmental investigation. Sardhana circle officer will conduct a detailed investigation into the matter.

Khan said that he would approach the court if the police do not lodge an FIR against the accused cops.
