UP: Officials sound alert as Ganga, Yamuna swell again in Allahabad

ALLAHABAD: The flood control department sounded an alert on Friday after the Ganga and the Yamuna registered constant rise in water levels.


The district authorities have reactivated its flood relief camps though both the rivers are currently flowing over two metres below danger mark.

ADM (finance) and in charge of flood relief work MP Singh said, “Water level of Ganga and Yamuna is increasing at a rate of 3cm per hour.

Officials of flood control department have reactivated flood relief outposts.”

On Thursday, the Ganga water had entered the famous Bade Hanuman temple on the banks of Sangam making it the second such instance in last one month.

Singh said the flood control division was reviewing the situation on an hourly basis.

Executive engineer of irrigation department’s flood control unit Brajesh Kumar said, “Water level of Ganga’s tributaries, Ken and Betwa, remained stable for a few hours in Banda and Hamirpur. It may rise again if more water is released from Matatila and Bariyarpur dams.”

“If additional water is released from the two dams, it will reach Allahabad within 24 hours and increase the water level of Yamuna and Ganga at Naini and Chatnag, respectively,” he added.

On Friday afternoon, the level of Ganga was recorded at 82.51 metres and 81.80 metres at Phaphamau and Chatnag. At Naini, Yamuna stood at 82.34 metres. The danger mark for both the rivers is 84.73 metres.

Currently, Ganga and Yamuna are 2.22 metres and 2.39 metres away from danger mark.
