Vadodara: Old woman locked on terrace for eating too much

VADODARA: In a bizarre case, a 75-year-old woman was confined to the terrace for eating too much and littering the house of her nephew in Salatwada.

The woman was rescued by 181 Abayam helpline recently.

A Good Samaritan living near the woman’s house called the helpline to come to her rescue as she was forced to live in a sorry condition.

On receiving the call, Abhayam officials and Mahila police station team reached the house, but found it locked. Officials then entered the neighbouring house and reached to the woman through the terrace. “The old lady was living in a a miserable condition and looked weak and ill. We had to bring down through the neighbour’s house,” said an official.

On asking around, the agency people learnt that the woman’s nephew owns an auto parts shop in Karelibaug . When the man was found and confronted, he said that he does not have time to take care of her. He also said that his aunt ate a lot and littered the house, so he kept her on the terrace and gave her limited quantity of food.

The man also he had brought her to his house since her own daughter did not take care of her. But due to her eating habits, he had to lock her on the terrace. Abhayam officials asked him to admit the elderly woman to an old age home, but the man refused citing societal concerns. The officials then counselled him to take care of her as she needs him the most in this condition.
