[Video] Woman alleges acid attack by husband over dowry in Baghpat

Baghpat: In yet another horrific incident which highlights deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, a woman and her brother were allegedly attacked with acid when they were on their way to a women police station. 

The woman alleges that her husband is responsible for the attack. The victim said she had filed a complaint against her husband for allegedly demanding dowry from her family, but was forced to take back the complaint after pressure from her husband.

The woman has suffered burn injuries on her hands and legs. Police say they have initiated the probe in the case.

"We were on our way to attend proceeding at the women police station in Baghpat. We had earlier filed a complaint of dowry harassment. The four accused stopped us and forced us to a roadside and threw acid on us. My sister's husband Mithun held my sister and attacked her with the chemical. Now, they are forcing us for a compromise, but we want to take the case forward against the accused," said victim's brother.

Meanwhile, the victim alleged that she had been repeatedly harassed for dowry by her in-laws and they were under pressure to take the case back.  

"As soon as we received the information about the acid attack, police reached the spot and rushed the victims to the hospital. The woman has received burn injuries on her leg and hands. The woman, who is accusing her husband of attack, was already sitting at the family counselling centre. we will take proper action in the case," said Ompal Singh, Circle Officer, Baghpat.

In a similar case in May this year, a man allegedly attacked his wife with acid but missed the target. However, the chemical fell on an elderly woman badly injuring her. The incident was reported from Raja Bazar area in Lucknow.

In another case in the same month, a woman was allegedly raped and attacked with acid by a man after she allegedly expressed her wish to end their relationship in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The accused, who had been dating the woman for the past five years, asked her to meet him at an orchard where he allegedly raped her. When she protested and told him that she wanted to end their relationship, he threw acid on her. 

The accused was later arrested and charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for rape and attacking a woman with acid.
