Voters yearning for change: Padmaraj

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency Congress candidate R Padmaraj Poojary said that voters of the constituency are fed up with the BJP’s “divisive politics” and are yearning for a change.

He told reporters on Wednesday, that he received overwhelming love and affection from people during campaigning, and hoped that the five guarantees implemented by the Congress government would work in the party’s favour this election.

The BJP’s “divisive politics” and “lack of development” in the constituency during the last three decades will ensure his victory, he said.

The Sanatana Hindu Dharma teaches to respect other religions like one’s own, and he has been following the same as a devout Hindu, said Padmaraj.

He accused the BJP of using Sanatana Dharma to do politics over murders, leaving families orphaned.

The constituency, blessed with an airport, seaport, and other infrastructure, has a lot of potential for development, and the city of Mangaluru can prosper like Mumbai. “The ‘communally sensitive’ tag is the deterrent. My aim is to restore the past glory of communal harmony in the district, and thereby attract investments and create job opportunities for our youth. Our national manifesto also talks about it,” he said.

Padmaraj claimed that whatever big investments the district has witnessed, like MRPL, NMPT, and others, happened when the constituency elected Congress MPs for over four decades.

“The BJP, which realised that they cannot win the election on development issues, started spreading hate and dividing people from 1991 onwards to win the election. Every time, people thought of giving another opportunity to the BJP with the hope of seeing development. Even this time, they are doing the same, but people are yearning for change,” he said.

To a query, Padmaraj said he had to suffix ‘Poojary’ to his name following the spread of misinformation that he does not belong to the Billava community.
