West Bengal: BJP man shot dead at his Nadia shop

RANAGHAT (NADIA): A BJP worker was allegedly shot dead here on Friday night. BJP’s Ranaghat MP Jagannath Sarkar claimed Trinamool Congress goons were behind the murder. TMC denied the allegation.

Sources said Haralal Debnath (52) was preparing to close his shop around 9.30pm when two miscreants approached him as customers.

As Debnath turned to fetch what they asked for, they shot him and fled. His wife Chandana raised an alarm and residents gathered. Debnath was taken to Ranaghat hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Chandana said: “ Two persons came as customers. When my husband turned to give them the goods, they fired at him.”

Nadia south BJP president Manabendra Nath Roy said: “He was our booth-level worker and had served BJP since 1995. TMC goons shot him as he had helped strengthen the party here.” The autopsy took place on Saturday. Ranaghat SP VSR Anantnag said: “Police are investigating the murder.”
