Woman moved to ICU over health complications

Kochi: The 23-year-old woman, accused of smothering her newborn baby and hurling the body wrapped in a plastic cover out of her apartment at Panampilly Nagar, was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in the city on Friday night for better medical care.

She was under medical observation at General Hospital and was moved to a private hospital overnight after she developed complications, sources said.

She has been admitted to the ICU under the care of the gynaecology department, source said.

Police sources said that a detailed statement collection can only be done after the woman’s condition stabilizes. She has been booked for murder and her arrest was recorded on Friday.

Police are probing the accused’s claim of being a sexual assault victim. Police said that further action would be taken after the woman’s interrogation.

Meanwhile, a magistrate visited her at the hospital on Saturday and completed the remand formalities. She is in judicial custody even as she remains under medical care, sources said.
