Zack Snyder reveals his vision for 'Justice League' finale
25 Apr 2024

Zack Snyder, the creative genius behind the Justice League of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), recently shared his vision for the franchise's finale.

In a GQ interview, he revealed plans for an epic showdown between the Justice League and Darkseid.

This confrontation was hinted at earlier but never materialized.

Snyder stated, "He (Superman) was going to have to succumb to the Anti-life, be destroyed, turn the clock back, and then get his chance for this battle against Darkseid."

DC Comics's Justice League is the "earth's first line of defense against threats too large for humanity to face alone."

During DCEU's run, Snyder began work on bringing the superhero team onscreen, however, he had to leave the movie mid-way, leaving it to Joss Whedon to complete the 2017 film. Not only did the film flop, but actors also alleged unprofessional behavior on set.

Later, Snyder released his vision of the movie in 2021, called Snyder's Cut.

Snyder's narrative was similar to that of 'Avengers' films
Plotline parallels

Snyder's narrative involved Superman falling to Darkseid and then discovering a method to rewind time and defeat him.

This plotline is strikingly similar to that of Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

In these films, the Avengers initially lose to Thanos but later devise a strategy to travel back in time and prevent Thanos from acquiring the Infinity Stones.

Snyder has previously used time travel in the DCEU
Time-travel tropes

Snyder also envisioned a time-travel sequence similar to one in 1978's Superman, where the superhero rescues Lois Lane by orbiting Earth in reverse.

This is not the first time Snyder has used this narrative tool; he previously crafted a memorable time-travel sequence in Justice League when Barry Allen uses the speed force to stop the mother boxes from merging.

Critics, however, suggest that frequent use of time travel can lead to plot inconsistencies and uninspired writing.

New DCU is far away from bringing Justice League back
Future

Now that DCEU is officially done and a new DC Universe is getting shaped under the leadership of James Gunn, it is a long road ahead for the Justice League to get formed again, if that's something executives are even planning to do.

Currently, Gunn is developing an introduction movie for Superman, featuring David Corenswet. All the original JL actors including Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Ezra Miller, won't be returning.
