Commentary
  • Right then, that is all we have from what has been a fascinating first Test match of this series. We will now take a trip to the south of Australia as Adelaide Oval awaits for the Pink-ball Test. That game will start on Thursday, December 8 and it promises to be another cracking encounter. The action will start at 9.30 am IST (4 am GMT). Our coverage though starts well in advance. So, do join us for the same. Till then, it's goodbye and cheers!
  • Pat Cummins, the Australian skipper starts by addressing his injury and says that he is fine and he could bowl but luckily it didn't get that close. Mentions that the boys played well and he is looking forward to the next Test in Adelaide and hopes to be out there on the field but says that they will assess for a couple of days. Adds that on Aussie wickets there could be big partnerships as the wickets could flat out a bit and when he was down the other quicks stepped up and Nathan Lyon just loves to bowl here. On Marnus, he says that he is ridiculous and is a superstar. On Lyon, he says that even when there's not much on offer, he is able to find a way.
  • Kraigg Brathwaite, the skipper of West Indies says that they are disappointed with the loss but they should commend the batters for the way they fought. Tells that in the first innings they gave away with the bat but they need to think as a bowling group how to go about their business to take 20 wickets in the match. Tells that they wanted to play just normal cricket and then take the game from thereon. Tells that they would have gone for the target had they got a good start but admits that they need to work hard to improve further. Says that the century he scored means a lot to him and he wanted to lead from the front especially as the opening batter. Informs that Roach is suffering a bit with injury and he wants to wait and see how it goes and pick the best XI for the next Test.
  • Marnus Labuschagne is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for surpassing a century in both innings of the match. He says that the ground is pretty similar to his home ground in Brisbane with a lot of bounce in it. Adds that the first innings was more special as the bounce was like a tennis ball and to get through that was a good feeling. Adds that it was a nice and fiery spell from Alzarri Joseph in the second innings and he just kept hoping around and mentions that it was a good feeling to be able to play well after that no-ball wicket. Mentions that when you come back to Test cricket after a bit of a break, the thing that works best is to play as many balls as possible.
  • Time for the Presentation..
  • This victory was the culmination of what Australia did over the course of five days. They were dominant with the bat on Day 1 and after that West Indies were always behind the 8-ball. Marnus Labuschagne scored a double century in the first innings and followed it up with another century in the second one while Smith also scored a double ton in his first outing with the bat. These huge number of runs proved too much for the West Indies in the end but they should be proud of their effort especially with the bat and quite clearly their openers were the biggest positives for them in this game. Windies would be hoping to build on this performance and come up with even better cricket in Adelaide.
  • The man of the moment, Nathan Lyon is down for a chat. He says that it's a great way to start and to come here at Perth and get a win is wonderful. Adds that they have some of the best players in their ranks and it's a pleasure to play with them. Says that Kraigg Brathwaite batted very well but he was able to find the rough and get him out. Mentions that Cummins seems to be fine and hopes that he will be in shape for the summer. On Marnus Labuschagne, Lyon says that he is an incredible player and has been doing well for the national side for a few years now. Jokingly says that Marnus Labuschagne wants all the players to call him 'baby GOAT,' but Lyon isn't sure about that one yet.
  • West Indies, on the other hand, showed lot of fight. Not many expected them to take this game so deep into the final day. However, their skipper played a fantastic captain’s knock scoring a century on the way and held the innings together as he got good support from couple of batters. His wicket early in the Day 5 though was a big blow and even though Chase and Joseph put up a brilliant counter-attacking stand for the 8th wicket, it was too much to do for them in the end.
  • Australia were under a bit of pressure coming into the Day 5 but honestly, they were always favourties to win this one. Lyon started the morning with a bang and got two big wickets of Mayers and Kraigg Brathwaite early. That opened the doors for them and when they got four wickets in the opening session this win was always around the corner. They, however, were made to work very hard in the afternoon session but eventually Head broke the 82-run stand between Joseph and Chase and then Lyon finished things off as he grabbed his 21st five-wicket haul and took 8 wickets in the game which includes six in the final innings. Overall, a convincing bowling performance by the Aussies, especially given the fact that they were missing the services of Cummins with the ball.
  • It’s a hard-fought victory for the Aussies and they go 1-0 up in this two-match Test series now! West Indies fought hard for four days and they came with hopes of pulling off something special on Day 5 but Australia were just too good for them on this final day. Pat Cummins and his boys now inch closer to that World Test Championship final as they consolidate their top position on the WTC points table.

Nathan Lyon to Kemar Roach, OUT! TIMBER! That's it, Australia have done it! Lovely bit of bowling once again from Nathan Lyon and he ends the innings with 6 wickets in his bag. This is flighted up on a nagging length and around off. Kemar Roach looks to play for the turn and puts out a dead bat at it but the ball goes straight on with the arm and knocks over the top of off stump. Roach departs for a golden duck and Australia win by 164 runs.
  • Kemar Roach is the last man in.

Nathan Lyon to Roston Chase, OUT! TAKEN! Nathan Lyon has the last laugh here and picks up a brilliant five-wicket haul. Lyon gioves it a bit more air and shortens the length ever so slightly on middle and leg. Roston Chase looks to just heave it aerially and in front of mid-wicket but gets undone in flight and ends up playing it off the inner half of the bat and much squarer. Mitchell Starc from deep mid-wicket rushes in and dives forward to take a good low catch. End of a fighting knock from Chase and Australia are onje wicket away from victory.
