Commentary
  • So that's it folks from this Test series and the English Test summer in general. England have won the series 1-0 but credit must be given to Pakistan for not allowing the hosts to have a free run. We had an entertaining 3-Test series and more entertainment awaits us in the pipeline. With the Tests done, the two sides will continue to take on each other in a 3-T20I series which happens at Old Trafford, Manchester. The first game begins on 28th August 2020 at 1800 Local (1700 GMT). Join us for the same and until then, cheers!
  • Joe Root, the English skipper, says that he is very pleased with how things have gone and is very proud of the way his team performed. Lauds the fantastic achievement of Anderson's 600 wickets in Tests. Says that Stuart Broad had a small motivational chat with Jimmy on the same. Adds that it has been an incredible journey for Anderson, playing for so long and getting to the milestone. On Crawley, he says that Zak reads the game well and that to see him play in this manner at this young age was fantastic. Says that when players play Test cricket, people would expect them to play well. Is glad to play cricket in the last 6 weeks or so. Ends by thanking all the authorities and both West Indies and Pakistan for coming to England for a Test series in these challenging times.
  • Azhar Ali, the Pakistani skipper, says that there is great regret in the way the last session in the first Test went, given the overall context of the series in hindsight. Lauds his team for playing competetitive cricket throughout the series and says he is proud of them. Adds that win or lose, there is always a lot to learn from any series. Notes that in this game the team was very behind and that it was easy to feel bogged down, but adds that the team stood strong and still. Says that he is happy to have got some runs under pressure. Ends by thanking the ECB and all the authorities for arranging this series at a short notice and is pleased that the fans managed to get themselves entertained at their homes as they could not come to the stadiums to catch a glimpse.
  • Pakistan's Player of the Series, nominated by Chris Silverwood, is Mohammad Rizwan. He first starts by thanking everyone and says that keeping in England is a big challenge. Adds that in his preparation he practiced a lot with hard balls and adds some good advice that he received from his coaches on the body positions that he needs to maintain to catch the ball well when behind the wickets. Says it was a challenge to keep wickets to both Yasir Shah and Naseem Shah, given the differences in their style of bowling. States boldly that one should not shy away from challenges and that they should be taken head on.
  • England's Player of the Series, nominated by Misbah-ul-Haq, is Jos Buttler. Asked about Anderson, Jos says that a variety of skills and a lot of weapons in his armoury makes Jimmy very unique. Says cheekily that he is lucky that Anderson managed to get his 600th wicket in this very game. Adds that the game turned its momentum in a very short span and states that all players must be aware that the same can happen in any match. States that he prepared well for this game. Exudes confidence that he can both hit the bowlers down the ground and in the air. Says that getting opportunities right at the start, when he comes to the crease, allows him to settle down well. Adds that he is looking forward to the next few days outside the bubble.
  • Zak Crawley gets the purple cap for his remarkable performance with the bat in this game. He recorded the 10th highest score ever by an Englishman in Tests, with his 267. He says that it is a great honour, especially to be among an elite company in that list. Adds that he wanted to get off to a quick start when he came in and was satisfied that he got that. Says he prepared well for this game and credits the whole team for playing well in this Test match. Says that Ben Stokes coming back into the side at any point was never in the back of his mind and that did not affect him much, as he kept the focus on his game. Thanks all the authorities for organizing such a wonderful series.
  • Do not go anywhere as the presentation ceremony is up next.
  • Tough luck for England though. After that breathtaking performance with the bat, it looked all but certain that they would take this Test, but Rain and Bad Light dented their hopes. And to add to that in many ways, England's second innings with the ball was rather lackadaisical and the pitch started to wear out too, effectively aiding the batsmen. An opening stand of 49 for Pakistan consumed a lot of deliveries. Similarly, Abid Ali and Azhar Ali kept the scoreboard ticking but kept eating deliveries. In fact, Abid Ali consumed more than 160 deliveries for his 42. Azhar Ali and Babar Azam combined to see Day 4 off without any hitches and Day 5 was easily negotiated, aided by considerable delay due to Rain and a wet outfield. Day 5 was more a formality but the highlight being that Anderson got to his 600th wicket milestone in the same.
  • Pakistan, replying to an already humungous total, had an even worse start than England. They were tottering at 75/5 before the skipper, who was under tremendous pressure already, due to his lack of performances with the bat, stitched a remarkable partnership with Rizwan. More than the runs, what mattered was that this partnership consumed a lot of deliveries and time. And that meant that the visitors could push the game to the last couple of days, where the forecast was not that good and thus aided their mission to see off the game without collapsing and handing over a defeat to England. Azhar also redeemed himself with an unbeaten 141 and proved how he can rise up to an occasion and perform scintillatingly well.
  • To jog your memory, England won the toss and opted to bat first. They did not get off to a good start though and were reeling at 127/4. And that's when a phenomenal partnership of 359 was stitched between Zak Crawley and Jos Buttler. The former made 267 and the latter 152 and the team's total reached a mind-boggling 583/8 before declaring. Pakistan's bowlers sweated out but to no proper avail. Mohammad Abbas went wicketless, while Yasir Shah, Shaheen Afridi and Fawad Alam got 2 apiece. Naseem Shah and Asad Shafiq managed a wicket each to their credit.
  • So, that's it. Handshakes all around. There never was going to be much of a result with so much of rain today and so the players have decided to mutually call it off. The day, whatever little happened, truly belonged to James Anderson. Jimmy reached the 600-wicket milestone in Tests and in doing so, becomes the first pace bowler to reach the landmark. Brilliant and for us fans, we are more than happy to have caught a glimpse of the same. The draw bodes well for Pakistan though. They were staring at a loss initially but with the way the weather panned out the last couple of days, they would consider themselves really blessed. After all, not only have they managed to draw the Test, but will also pocket 13 points in their WTC quest.
