Commentary
  • That is it then from this game and Gujarat have now become the first team this season to defend a total on this ground. The action in the league continues on Wednesday, the 26th of April with Bangalore taking on Kolkata in Bengaluru in what will be a reverse fixture of the game which Kolkata won convincingly last time around. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but our coverage will begin much earlier. Do join us then. Take care and goodbye!
  • Abhinav Manohar is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. He says that he is lucky to be a part of this franchise as they allow them to be in the nets for as long as they want and it helps get into a good rhythm. Claims that he has been gifted with timing since he was young and it is a privilege to play at this level. Explains that he wanted to take some time to get his eye in and then go on to play his own game.
  • Hardik Pandya, the captain of Gujarat says that it has been their motto to take calls on the spot rather than pre-meditating and his captaincy works on instincts. Adds that he and the coach have a similar mindset and often they back their calls. Goes on to mention that they used the spinners' full quota in the middle overs as they had the ability to take wickets and didn't want to take the game deep. On Abhinav Manohar, he says that he is hitting the ball well and he has been doing so since the last year and he is currently their best batter at the death.
  • The Presentation ceremony...
  • Rashid Khan is down for a chat. He says that he is working on a few things like his line and length. Mentions that he is happy with the wickets but still needs to work on a few things as the ball is not going where he wants. Adds that he is happy with what he has done so far and is looking forward to the second half of the tournament. Explains that it is about hitting the right areas and that makes it difficult for the batters so he wanted to do that. Informs that it is great to have Noor Ahmad in the side and they played U19 together. Claims that the kid wants to learn and has worked really hard. Goes on to say that he keeps asking questions and always wants to get better so he is happy he got his opportunity and he is doing well which helps Gujarat and also Afghanistan.
  • Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai says that it is really disappointing as they had control till the 15th over but in the last few overs, they went for too many runs. Explains that it is about execution and they need to see what they deliver on different pitches and different batters which they didn’t do. Mentions that all teams have their different strengths and they know they have a good batting lineup so they backed themselves to chase down the target. Adds that they could not get going as they struggled in the start and there is dew so if they had started well, anything could have happened. Explains that losing wickets early is not good when chasing 200 plus and they needed to bat responsibly. Ends by saying that in the last seven overs, they didn’t have enough batters to achieve the target.
  • Earlier in the game, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first and this turned out to be a good decision as Arjun Tendulkar got rid of Wriddhiman Saha early. A couple of Gujarat batters then came in, got starts and got out but Shubman Gill stayed on and brought up a lovely half-century. David Miller and Abhinav Manohar though went through the gears in the second half of the innings and got maximums at will with Rahul Tewatia coming in at the death and proving to be the icing on the cake. For Mumbai, Tendulkar bowled well up front and so did Jason Behrendorff but the Aussie pair of Cameron Green and Riley Meredith conceded plenty of runs. Piyush Chawla picked up a couple of wickets as well but overall, they once again conceded 200-plus runs. Coming to the chase, Gujarat bossed it with the ball from start to finish and made short work of the Mumbai batting lineup.
  • Mumbai were under the pump from the very first ball and simply couldn't cope with it. Rohit Sharma fell early after which Ishan Kishan went hard and couldn't time pretty much anything. Cameron Green also came out swinging but did get away a few boundaries and looked good but a bunch of wickets fell in the middle phase. Suryakumar Yadav also played a couple of flamboyant shots but fell to the spinners and towards the end it was a 45-run stand between young Nehal Wadhera and Piyush Chawla that got Mumbai to a decent total. Still, they fell short by over 50 runs and will look to bounce back after successive defeats.
  • With a daunting total on the board, Gujarat made sure they made the best use of the new ball, and skipper Hardik Pandya along with Mohammad Shami swung the ball to perfection. Pandya got an early wicket after which the spin duo of Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad wreaked havoc in the middle overs. The maestro Rashid was economical as well and picked up a couple of wickets with Noor picking up three big wickets as well. The second string of pacers did get a bit of stick in the later part of the innings but Mohit Sharma closed out the game well with a couple of wickets.
  • Pretty much a cakewalk of a victory in the end for Gujarat and they now get their fifth win of the season and go level on points with Chennai at the top of the table. As for Mumbai, they slump to back-to-back defeats and stay in the lower half of the points table.
