Commentary
  • Right then! That is all we have from this game. The series now moves to Belfast for the second T20I, which will be played on 22nd July at 1600 Local (1500 GMT). So do join us for that. Till then, take care and goodbye!
  • Temba Bavuma, the South Africa skipper, says that he feels that 180 was a par score and that they were a few runs short after the first innings. Adds that bowling is their strength and he is super happy with the way they bowled. Credits every bowler for the way they bowled and defended the score.
  • Tabraiz Shamsi is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH, says that he just tries to execute the plans and do what the captain asks him to. Adds that he has a few more variations up his sleeve and the pitch made his job easier as he only had to bowl in the right areas.
  • Andy Balbirnie, the Ireland skipper, says that they did not bat very well in the Powerplay. Says that the target wasn't the big one but their batting was not up to the mark. Finishes by saying that they need to execute their plans better.
  • South Africa were brilliant with the ball. George Linde and Kagiso Rabada took one wicket each in the Powerplay while Lungi Ngidi took two to rock the Irish top order. After that, in the middle overs, it was their spin duo that ruled the game. Linde returned to take one more wicket and Tabraiz Shamsi spun a web around the batters with his 4 wickets in the middle overs. It was a team performance by them and they should be mighty pleased.
  • Paul Stirling hit a six on the first ball and that was the only thing that went Ireland's way. He fell on the very next ball and they lost Kevin O'Brien and George Dockrell soon after. Andy Balbirnie tried to replicate his form from the ODI series but fell in the last over of the Powerplay and they were way behind the curve. Harry Tector fought a lone battle in the middle overs but lacked support from the other batters. After he fell, the writing was clear on the wall and they fell short by 33 runs.
  • A wonderful bowling performance by South Africa to defend this score. This wasn't the biggest of the targets but their bowling never let the Irish get in front of the rate. So, South Africa win the first-ever T20I that they play against Ireland!
