Commentary
  • Right then, that's all we have from this one-sided contest. New Zealand proved to be too hot to handle for Bangladesh and the tourists need to find a quick fix to their batting vulnerabilities. The second ODI is on Tuesday, 23rd March 2021, at 1400 local (0100 GMT). We look forward to your company then. Until next time, it's goodbye and cheers!
  • Tom Latham, the victorious New Zealand captain, says that it was a game full of debutants and milestones. He mentions about the bowling group that has been together for a while. Terms their bowling performance as clinical. On not many batsmen getting to bat, Latham smiles and says that when you win, it doesn't matter how you win and to chase down 132 in 20 odd overs was amazing. Adds that they know how destructive Guptill can be if he gets going like that. States that it was another outstanding crowd and hopes to get the same in Christchurch.
  • Tamim Iqbal, the skipper of Bangladesh, says that there were too many soft dismissals and they have themselves to blame and 130 on that wicket was nowhere near. Mentions that they take a lot of pride in their batting and would like to correct the mistakes. Shares that they had a good preparation so no complaints there and he doesn't want to give any excuses. Hopes to put up a better show in the next match. Talks about Mahedi Hasan and his performance and tells that he showed a lot of character in this game.
  • TRENT BOULT IS THE MAN OF THE MATCH! The speedster is happy that they got over the line and started the series nicely. Praises the bowlers for restricting Bangladesh to a decent total and tells that it's nice to chase down the target with only a couple of wickets down. Mentions that it is nice coming down here at the University Oval and it's nice to have a good crowd in. States that he has been here a couple of times in the last few weeks and tells that it's a nice place to bowl on and they have got some good results as well. Boult is looking forward to coming here in the next season. Further says that there were some nice words spoken when the debutants got their ODI caps and he adds that it is a happy changing room.
  • It was a very poor outing for Bangladesh with the bat. They put out a flavourless show where they lost wickets at regular intervals and struggled for partnerships. The conditions were challenging but not at all unplayable. There were a few positives with the ball though. Taskin Ahmed's pace troubled the Kiwi batsmen while Mahedi Hasan also bowled accurately to make run-scoring tough. Had they got enough runs on the board, they could have challenged more. Stay tuned for the presentation...
  • All over in the blink of an eye! A stroll in the park for the Kiwis. Bangladesh turned out to be of no match as they got steamrolled by the home team. Chasing a paltry target, New Zealand got off to a flying start courtesy of Martin Guptill's brisk knock and had he not got out, this chase would have been over even before. The rest of the work was done safely by the partnership between Henry Nicholls and Devon Conway as the Black Caps registered a thumping win. Devon though will be disappointed to throw his wicket away towards the end. With this win, New Zealand have extended their winning streak to 9 matches at this venue and also maintained their invincible record at the University Oval.

Hasan Mahmud to Devon Conway, OUT! CAUGHT! Where has that come from? Conway has given his wicket here! Good length ball on middle, Conway uses his feet and then looks to swing it to the leg side. It takes the inner half of the bat and flies towards deep square leg where Mahmudullah runs ahead and takes the catch. Too little, too late for Bangladesh.
