Commentary
  • So that is it from this game. South Africa take the lead in this 3-match ODI series and spoil the world champions comeback in ODIs. England will look to put this loss behind and bounce back stronger. South Africa will look to wrap up the series in the second ODI. The second ODI will be played on Friday, 7th February. That match will begin at 1300 local (1100 GMT). Join us for that one. Till then, cheers!
  • For his superb knock of 107 South African skipper is also the Man of the Match. De Kock says that it was a good night and says he is glad to get back to winning ways. Says they had chats about how they want to take the ODI team forward and today was the beginning of it. On spinners, he says it is good to have two spinners, especially Smuts as he is an all-rounder. De Kock humbly says that it has just been one game and he hopes that captaincy serves him well. Adds that the extra responsibility brought the best out of him. Tells him and Bavuma knew running hard between the wickets was the way to go about it and they just tried to carry the momentum.
  • England skipper, Morgan says they were completely outplayed by South Africa and admits that they misread the condition. Tells everyone struggled with the bat except Woakes and Denly. Credits South Africa for starting the series well and says South Africa bowled better and executed better than they did. Says they lost wickets in clusters and the total was only good if they would have been able to manage to pick wickets regularly. Tells the new guys learnt a lot and adds they saw that it is not all crash and bang like T20. Says they need to continue to learn like how they did in the past.
  • Earlier in the day after being put into bat, England were in tatters at 131/6 but Joe Denly's fighting 87 along with a smart knock of 40 from Woakes gave the tourists something to bowl at and they managed to get to 258. It was a superb bowling performance from South Africa. Tabraiz Shamsi was the star as his 3-fer never let England going and restricted them to an under par score.
  • A sorry bowling performance from the world champions. They were unable to adjust to the demands of the pitch and had no ideas on how to get rid of de Kock and Bavuma. When they did, it was just too late as the game was already beyond any doubts. Yes, it is not an experienced bowling line-up but England skipper Morgan would have hoped for a better display from them. Three bowlers got into the wickets column. Root, Woakes and Jordan. The latter was expensive as well. Parkinson did not have any success on his debut.
  • Chasing a moderate total of 259, South Africa were dealt with an early blow as they lost Reeza Hendricks early. Bavuma then joined his skipper and what we saw from the two was just pure masterclass. They took on the English attack. The skipper and his deputy led from the front and the pair added 173 for the second wicket and killed all the English hopes. Quinton de Kock, the skipper scored a century but Bavuma fell 2 runs short of a well-deserved hundred but that did not prove to be costly as van der Dussen applied the finishing touches.
  • The world champions have been humbled on their first game as champions. England's nightmare at Newlands continues. What a brilliant performance from the Proteas and their life under new leader, Quinton de Kock is off to a comprehensive win. Their sorrows and disappointment from the Test series have been reduced a tad here as they take a 1-0 lead in this 3-match ODI series.
