Commentary
180 plays 57/4. It is all about one good partnership for West Indies to get to parity and one more could take them into a decent lead, which could be very valuable on this surface. The only thing is - having watched around 77 overs of play on this deck, one can't help but get the feeling that there is that one ball which has the batter's name on it. The best period to bat seems to be the period from the 17th over till the 42nd-43rd over, after which, the ball starts to reverse swing. So the first session will be pretty much key for the home side. If they enjoy a good morning session, that deficit will get a lot lesser and a potentially decent lead can be gained further. Australia, on the other hand, will be aiming to strike regularly and make the batters work for their runs. One expects the pitch to start misbehaving as well and run scoring might get trickier. The first ball is expected to be bowled at 2 pm GMT, but our buildup will begin well in advance. Join us earlier then. In the meanwhile, you can catch all the action from the second Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
The hero of day one, Jayden Seales, is up for a chat with the broadcasters. Calls his 5-fer as a pretty special one for him, as he had played against Australia once but got injured there. So to come back and pick up 5 wickets feels really spell for him. On the bowling plans after the toss, Seales says that with the new ball, the plan was to bowl a bit fuller and get the batter coming forward. Feels that the pitch was a bit slower than what the Windies expected. Adds that there was some good carry and it worked out well for his side. On Shamar Joseph, Jayden says that he was special on Day 1 and has been special for West Indies. Thinks that Shamar loves playing against Australia, adding that his new-ball burst made it easier for the other bowlers. On his advice for his side's batters come Day 2, JS wants them to be themselves and back their skills. Wants them to play normal cricket and believes that if they do so, the runs will come.
Buoyed by their superb bowling display, West Indies came out confidently to the middle to bat, but just like their own bowlers made the new ball talk, Australia did the same. Mitchell Starc dismissed both the openers inside the 7th over but then came a strong fightback through Keacy Carty and debutant Brandon King. The duo added 36 for the third wicket and just when it seemed like the ball had lost its shine and batting was getting easier, Cummins and Hazlewood struck twice in the span of 6 balls to end the day on even terms.
The West Indies were not too disappointed on losing the toss and made the new ball talk. Shamar Joseph just let it rip and rocked the top order while Jayden Seales took care of the middle and lower order. The duo shared 9 wickets between them, with Seales claiming his third 5-wicket haul in Tests. The only blemish was their fielding, as 4 catches were put down, which could have put more misery on the visitors. Only time will tell whether those dropped catches come back to haunt them.
A sluggish pitch on offer, predicted to deteriorate as the days go by. But rain before the Test means that there was moisture on the surface which would make the new ball move around. What does the captain winning the toss do? Pat Cummins looked at the larger picture and trusted his batters, opting to bat first. But in reply, his batters let him down, as Australia folded up for 180, with just three batters crossing 25, one of those being the skipper himself. There was only one significant stand of 89 between Usman Khawaja and Travis Head, who rode their luck, with the former being dropped twice. However, either side of that stand, there was nothing much to see on the board.
14 wickets on the opening day of the Test. The most at Kensington Oval, in the last 14 years. Australia have fought back well with the ball and the hosts will admit that had it not been for those last 2 wickets of Carty and Warrican, this could have been labelled as an out and out day for West Indies. Now though, we will have to call it as an even-stevens day.

3 minutes left on the clock. Only one more over would be possible. Worth a try with Lyon? Nope, says Cummins. He will bowl the last over of the day.
