August Car Sales 2025: Hyundai Reclaims Second Spot, Tata Motors Settles for Third, Mahindra Drops to Fourth

The Indian auto market has once again witnessed a shuffle in rankings as Hyundai Motor India regained its position as the country’s second-largest carmaker in August 2025. Tata Motors and Mahindra , who have been trading places with Hyundai for months, slipped to third and fourth respectively.
This consistency has helped the Korean automaker stay right behind Maruti Suzuki , which continues to dominate the charts with 1,80,683 units sold in August.
Year-on-Year Sales Decline Across Players
Despite the reshuffle at the top, all three contenders-Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra-registered a year-on-year slowdown:
Even Maruti Suzuki, the market leader, wasn’t immune. Its total sales dipped marginally from 1,81,782 units in August 2024 to 1,80,683 units this year. In the domestic passenger vehicle segment, it sold 1,31,278 units, compared to 1,43,075 units in the same month last year.
The competition for the No. 2 spot has turned into one of the most exciting storylines in the Indian car market. With Hyundai’s steady volumes, Tata’s aggressive portfolio, and Mahindra’s SUV strength, the rankings could shuffle again in the coming months.
For now, Hyundai enjoys the edge-but the race is far from over.
Hyundai Edges Ahead in the Numbers Game
Hyundai reported 44,001 units in domestic sales last month, outpacing Tata Motors’ 41,001 units and Mahindra’s 39,399 units.
