India's popular EV two-wheeler company, Ola Electric, has launched a new Gen-3 upgrade program with the aim of retaining its existing customers and increasing their satisfaction.

The company's founder and CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, recently announced this on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, "We are launching an upgrade program for our Gen-1 and Gen-2 customers to help them transition to our latest Gen-3 products, including the 4680 version. This program is starting this weekend in Bengaluru."

This plan is for customers who own older Ola Gen-1 or Gen-2 models. They can now upgrade to the company's advanced Gen-3 platform.

Available models include the S1 Pro, S1 Pro+, and S1X Gen-3 scooters, while the Roadster, Roadster X, and Roadster X+ bikes are available.

What's special about Gen-3 models?

Premium variants are also available with Ola's indigenous 4680 "Bharat Cell" battery technology. Gen-3 models include hardware improvements such as a mid-drive motor, chain-drive system, and improved efficiency and durability. Riding range can reach up to 320 kilometers on some models.

Additionally, MoveOS software updates have made the riding experience and ownership easier and smarter.

This upgrade plan is a significant strategic move for Ola Electric, as the company currently faces several challenges.

Ola, which once held over 36 percent market share at the end of 2024, has now fallen to just 4-6 percent. Companies like TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto control over 60 percent of the market. Customer complaints have primarily been related to service delays, parts availability, and reliability. The company has also been financially impacted. Revenue halved in Q3, leading to a loss of ₹490 crore.

To address these issues, Ola has initiated a "structural reset." The company is reducing the number of its physical stores to approximately 550 by March 2026, from 700 previously.

Additionally, "hyperservice" centers have been launched, with a target of same-day completion of 80 percent of service requests. The service backlog has been reduced by 50 percent. The upgrade program is part of this broader strategy, which will retain existing customers by providing them with the latest technology and improved performance.

Will the OLA era return?

Experts believe this plan will help increase customer loyalty. However, the exact exchange value, discount, or payment details of the upgrade have not yet been announced.

Launched in Bengaluru, it is likely to expand to other cities. Ola Electric believes the Gen-3 platform, along with PLI certification and advanced battery technology, will help the company regain its market leadership.
