Honda vs Hero: Battle for the Top Spot Heats Up in India’s Two-Wheeler Market
India’s two-wheeler market is heating up, and the competition is sharper than ever. As FY26 draws to a close, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has nearly caught up with market leader Hero MotoCorp, turning the spotlight on an intense sales battle.
Honda Pushes Hard to Close the Gap
With just days left in the financial year, Honda has stepped on the accelerator. The company rolled out attractive discounts, dealer-level offers, and multiple schemes over the past few months to boost demand, especially in the scooter segment.
The overall scooter market has been on a strong growth path, expanding by 17.7% to 7.3 million units in the first 11 months of FY26. However, Honda’s growth has been comparatively slower at 7.7%, with sales reaching 2.8 million units.
EV Delay Impacts Honda’s Momentum
One key factor behind Honda’s slower growth is its delayed push into the electric vehicle space. Its electric Activa faced setbacks and had to be withdrawn following customer complaints. Meanwhile, rivals like TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto have surged ahead in the EV race.
For now, Honda is doubling down on its petrol scooter dominance, especially with its popular Activa range, while using offers to keep customers engaged.
Neck-and-Neck with Hero MotoCorp
The numbers reveal just how close the competition has become. Honda has recorded total sales of 5.2 million units so far in FY26, while Hero MotoCorp stands slightly ahead at 5.5 million units.
In terms of market share, Honda holds 25.36%, closely trailing Hero’s 26.92%. The narrow gap highlights how both companies are pushing hard to stay ahead in one of the world’s largest two-wheeler markets.
What Lies Ahead?
With fuel prices rising, the shift towards EVs could accelerate in the coming years. While Honda is currently banking on petrol scooters, its future strategy in the electric segment will be crucial in determining whether it can overtake Hero MotoCorp.
For now, the race is tighter than ever, and far from over.
