How Many Indians Have Bought the Tesla Model Y So Far? Check the Latest Numbers

Newspoint
Tesla may be one of the world’s most admired EV brands, but its debut run in India has been far from electrifying. The company, led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, officially entered the Indian market in August 2025. Despite heavy investments and high anticipation, Tesla’s sales numbers tell a very different story.

A Lukewarm Start for Tesla in India

India’s EV market is growing fast, but Tesla’s entry hasn’t created the spark many expected. In November alone, the company managed to sell just 48 units, taking its total sales so far to 157 vehicles. For a brand known for reshaping mobility worldwide, these figures appear surprisingly modest.

Why the Low Numbers? The Price Tag Says It All

Tesla’s Model Y, the first model introduced in India, comes in two variants, and both carry a premium price.
  • Base variant: ₹59.89 lakh
  • Higher variant: ₹67.89 lakh
The biggest hurdle is the 70% import duty imposed on fully imported EVs. As a result, the Model Y costs about 30% more in India compared to the US. For many buyers, this steep pricing puts Tesla out of reach, especially when several Indian and global EV brands offer more affordable alternatives.

Limited Presence, Growing Infrastructure

At present, Tesla operates only two showrooms, one in Mumbai and another in Delhi. The company recently launched its first Tesla Center at the Arcade Business Park in Gurugram, signaling slow but steady expansion. However, widespread accessibility will likely require more showrooms, service centers, and charging infrastructure.

What the Model Y Offers

While the price may be high, Tesla’s Model Y comes loaded with features designed to impress:
  • 15.4-inch touchscreen display
  • Heated and ventilated seats
  • Ambient lighting
  • Rear-wheel drive setup
  • Nine-speaker audio system
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Blind-spot collision warning
  • Tinted panoramic glass roof
  • Impressive range of 500-622 km
It is a technologically rich EV, but Indian buyers seem hesitant to opt for such a premium model without better pricing or a wider support ecosystem.

What’s Next for Tesla in India?

Despite the slow start, it’s too early to count Tesla out. With India pushing aggressively for EV adoption, the company may consider local assembly or manufacturing in the future, steps that could drastically cut prices and boost sales.

For now, Tesla’s journey in India has begun, but the road ahead will take more than brand power to accelerate.
