How to Apply for an International Driving Permit in India : Step-by-Step Guide

Planning to drive abroad? Your Indian driving licence by itself may not meet international requirements. In most countries, travellers must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP), a document that serves as an authorised translation of your Indian licence. Valid in over 150 countries under United Nations agreements, the IDP includes your photo, personal details and the categories of vehicles you are permitted to drive overseas.

The permit includes your photograph, personal details, and the category of vehicles you are authorised to drive. It helps foreign authorities easily verify your driving credentials and ensures you can legally rent and drive vehicles abroad without complications.

Eligibility Criteria for Applying IDP in India

Before starting the application process, make sure you meet the following conditions:

  • You must be an Indian citizen
  • You should hold a valid Indian driving licence
  • The applicant must be 18 years or older
  • A valid passport is compulsory

Meeting these basic requirements ensures a smooth application process without delays or rejections.

Documents Required for IDP Application

Keeping all documents ready in advance can speed up your application:

  • Form 4A, the International Driving Permit application form, downloadable from the Parivahan portal
  • Form 1A, a medical fitness certificate signed by a registered medical practitioner
  • Copies of your Indian driving licence, passport, and valid visa
  • Three to four recent passport-size photographs
  • Some Regional Transport Offices may also request a copy of your confirmed air ticket for verification purposes

How to Apply Online Through Parivahan Portal

The online method is the most convenient way to apply:

  • Visit the official Parivahan Sarathi website
  • Select the state where your driving licence was originally issued
  • Choose “Apply for International Driving Permit (IDP)” under the Driving Licence services
  • Enter your driving licence number and date of birth
  • Upload scanned copies of the required documents and photographs
  • Pay the standard ₹1,000 application fee, along with any applicable RTO service charges

Payments can be made digitally via UPI, debit card, credit card, or net banking. In certain cases, Aadhaar-based authentication may be required. Applicants may also be asked to visit the RTO for biometric verification or to show original documents.

Applying for IDP Offline at RTO

For those who prefer the traditional approach, offline application is also available:

  • Visit the RTO under whose jurisdiction you reside
  • Submit Form 4A with physical copies of all required documents
  • Pay the prescribed fee at the counter
  • Some RTOs may conduct a brief interaction to check your understanding of international road signs and traffic rules

Processing Time, Delivery and Validity

Once the application is submitted and verified, the International Driving Permit is generally processed and dispatched within 3 to 7 working days. The permit is delivered to your registered address.

The IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue and cannot be renewed. After expiry, you must apply for a fresh permit if needed.

Important Points to Remember Before Driving Abroad

  • The IDP does not replace your Indian driving licence
  • You must always carry your original Indian DL, IDP, and passport while driving internationally
  • Driving rules, speed limits, and documentation requirements vary by country, so it is advisable to check local regulations before you travel

With a simplified application process and quick turnaround time, getting an International Driving Permit in India is no longer complicated. Applying in advance ensures you enjoy a smooth, legal, and stress-free driving experience during your international journey.
