Lexus Launches First Electric Sedan in India; ES 500e to Rival German Luxury Brands
Japanese luxury automaker Lexus has officially entered India’s premium electric sedan segment with the launch of the all-new ES 500e, priced at ₹89.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This marks the brand’s first fully electric offering in the country, intensifying competition with established German rivals such as BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.
Unveiled globally in April 2025, the eighth-generation ES strengthens Lexus’ Indian portfolio, which already includes models like the RX, NX, and LX SUVs, along with the LM luxury MPV.
The ES 500e is powered by a 74.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, strategically mounted beneath the floor to optimise cabin space and stability. The sedan features a dual-motor setup—producing 221 hp at the front and 118 hp at the rear—delivering a combined output of 338 hp.
Equipped with Lexus’ advanced DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle offers a claimed range of approximately 440 km on a single charge. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, placing it firmly in the high-performance luxury EV category.
The DIRECT4 system dynamically adjusts torque distribution between the front and rear axles, ranging from 100:0 to 0:100 based on driving conditions. During initial acceleration or straight-line driving, torque is typically balanced between 60:40 and 40:60, ensuring stability, traction, and smooth performance.
Design and StylingThe ES 500e adopts Lexus’ evolving design language, featuring a redesigned front bumper with signature L-shaped LED daytime running lights and distinctive Z-shaped turn indicators.
From the side, the sedan showcases a sleek silhouette with black accents and newly styled alloy wheels. At the rear, a connected LED light bar enhances the vehicle’s modern aesthetic and reinforces brand identity.
Interior and FeaturesInside, the ES 500e offers a minimalist yet premium cabin, with a strong emphasis on digital interfaces.
Additional features include a three-spoke steering wheel, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), ambient lighting, and electrically adjustable front seats with memory, heating, and ventilation functions.
Market PositionWith the launch of the ES 500e, Lexus aims to strengthen its foothold in India’s growing luxury EV segment.
