Maruti Suzuki Set to Launch Hybrid Version of Fronx, Aims to Reduce Dependence on CNG

Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest car manufacturer, is now shifting its focus toward hybrid technology. In a major development, the company has begun testing a hybrid version of its popular compact SUV, the Maruti Fronx. This marks a significant step in Maruti’s strategy to diversify its powertrain options beyond traditional petrol and CNG variants. Reports indicate that the new hybrid Fronx has already been spotted testing on Indian roads, suggesting that the launch could happen soon.

What makes this even more noteworthy is the presence of LIDAR sensors on the test vehicle. This strongly hints that the upcoming hybrid Fronx might come equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), potentially making it one of the few compact models in its segment to feature such advanced safety technology. If launched with Level-2 ADAS, it would follow in the footsteps of Maruti’s recently introduced e-Vitara, the brand’s first vehicle to offer this safety feature. This suggests a broader move by Maruti to incorporate ADAS across more models in the near future.

From the outside, the test mule of the hybrid Fronx looks nearly identical to the current petrol version. The only visual cue setting it apart is the ‘hybrid’ badging at the rear, confirming that it is indeed the electrified version of the crossover based on the Baleno platform. Like the petrol variant, this hybrid model will also be sold through the Nexa dealership network.

The new Fronx Hybrid is expected to feature a more powerful setup, possibly incorporating a 48V mild hybrid system. It is likely to be paired with either a 1.0-litre or a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. While the design, features, and cabin layout are expected to remain largely unchanged, the integration of hybrid technology and ADAS could significantly enhance both performance and safety.

As of now, Maruti Suzuki has not officially revealed the engine specifications, power output, or mileage figures for the hybrid Fronx. There is also no confirmed launch date. However, the fact that the vehicle has been spotted without camouflage during testing indicates that the company might be preparing for a launch within the next few months. Given the Fronx’s strong export performance—it became the fastest Indian crossover to reach one lakh exports within just 25 months of its debut in June 2023—Maruti is likely to target international markets with the hybrid version as well.

This move aligns with Suzuki Motor Corporation’s recently unveiled powertrain roadmap and signals Maruti’s push towards cleaner, more fuel-efficient mobility solutions, especially in segments where CNG has been a popular choice. By introducing the hybrid Fronx, the company hopes to offer customers a compelling alternative that balances performance, efficiency, and advanced features.
