Maruti's Affordable Car Makes a Comeback, Sales Nearly Double After GST 2.0 Price Cut

Newspoint

After months of weak demand, sales of affordable cars from Maruti Suzuki picked up sharply in December 2025. The key reason behind this revival has been the reduction in car prices following the GST 2.0 changes, which made entry-level cars significantly cheaper for buyers.

In December 2025, Maruti Suzuki sold 14,225 cars in its mini segment at the wholesale level.

This marks a massive 92 percent year-on-year growth and is the highest monthly sales figure for this segment in the financial year 2025–26. Of the total units sold, around 10,800 were of the Alto K10, while sales of the S-Presso crossed the 3,000 mark.

Commenting on the surge, Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales) at Maruti Suzuki, said that despite almost 100 percent growth in the mini segment, the company is still facing pending bookings of more than one and a half months.

According to Maruti, the mini segment—which includes the Alto K10 and S-Presso—contributed 6.2 percent to the company’s total sales in December. This is a sharp jump from 7,418 units sold in December 2024 and also a 15 percent rise compared to November 2025 sales of 12,347 units.

Strong performance across other segments too

Maruti Suzuki also saw strong growth in its compact segment. Models such as the Maruti Baleno, Maruti Dzire, Maruti Swift, Maruti Wagon R, Celerio and Ignis recorded higher sales compared to last year.

Among these, the Dzire emerged as the best-selling car of the entire year 2025, while the Baleno was Maruti’s top-selling model in December, with sales of 22,108 units. These models played a major role in strengthening Maruti’s overall market position.

New prices boost demand

Following the GST reduction, Maruti also rolled out additional discounts on the Alto K10 and S-Presso. As a result, prices of these cars dropped by over ₹1 lakh. The starting ex-showroom price of the Alto K10 has now fallen to ₹3.70 lakh, while the S-Presso starts at ₹3.50 lakh, bringing both models well under the ₹4 lakh mark.

According to the company, demand for the Alto K10 has been strong across nearly 100 cities in India. The growth has been even more pronounced in smaller cities and towns, highlighting the rising importance of non-metro markets for affordable cars.
