Electric motorcycles are beginning to chart new ground in India, with startups like Ahmedabad-based Matter Motor reimagining what a two-wheeler can deliver to the everyday rider. Moving away from the over-saturated electric scooter segment, the brand is now focusing on mass-market, petrol-style motorcycles — but with electric heartbeats. Their flagship product, designed with a gear system, could mark a major shift in how electric mobility is perceived across rural and urban regions alike.

Why Geared E-Motorbikes Could Be a Game-Changer

While electric scooters continue to gain market share, particularly in urban regions, the motorcycle segment — especially geared motorcycles — remains a tough terrain for electric alternatives. Matter Motor has identified a significant gap here: the need for control, traction, and torque, especially in non-urban environments.

By incorporating a gearbox into its electric motorcycles, Matter aims to deliver that familiar ride feel for traditional bikers. Unlike most EVs that operate on a single-speed system, this approach offers enhanced response on uneven roads and hilly terrains — something often missing in current electric offerings.

Creating a Complete Riding Ecosystem

Matter’s core offering, which currently competes with traditional 200cc petrol bikes, will soon be followed by models targeting the 150cc and 125cc equivalents. These aren’t just scaled-down versions, but are expected to run on different platforms designed for efficiency and localisation.

The company's aim is to meet the rising demand in the 125cc to 200cc category — still one of the strongest segments in India's two-wheeler market. With affordability and performance in mind, these new launches could present tough competition to petrol-powered rivals.

Affordability Meets High-Tech Engineering

One of the major hurdles in India's EV transition has been pricing. Matter Motor addresses this with an aggressive strategy built on vertical integration. Rather than outsourcing design and paying royalties for intellectual property, the company has built its own electronic systems, motor hardware, and software architecture.

This move helps bring down manufacturing costs and allows the company to price its flagship motorcycle, the Aera, competitively — starting at around ₹1.94 lakh (ex-showroom). Despite being a premium electric vehicle, this pricing makes it an accessible alternative to high-capacity petrol bikes.

Manufacturing and Patents Rooted in India

Apart from key imports like battery cells, chips, and magnets, the rest of the Aera is designed and built in India. The company’s localised manufacturing facility handles everything from electronics integration to full assembly.

Additionally, Matter Motor holds over 375 patent filings with more than 70 already granted. These cover technologies such as multi-speed gearboxes, liquid cooling, charging infrastructure, and real-time diagnostics — positioning the brand as a technological innovator in the EV space.

Proactive Support Through Smart Connectivity

What truly sets Matter apart is its digital-first ownership experience. Using embedded software, the Aera provides real-time feedback on performance. Predictive maintenance tools allow Matter’s service team to pre-empt issues, contacting riders before faults escalate. This focus on intelligent after-sales support could drastically improve the reliability perception of electric bikes in India.

The company is also working on building a complete ecosystem — offering spares, on-ground service, and a dedicated sales network that supports long-term customer engagement.

Roadmap for Exports and New Use Cases

While India remains the primary market, Matter Motor has its sights on global expansion. Beginning next year, it plans to enter Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, and selected European regions where the demand for efficient, clean transport is rising.

Beyond commuter bikes, Matter also plans to enter the light commercial vehicle space with 125cc-equivalent electric bikes suited for delivery and cargo applications. Moreover, they aim to develop riding accessories such as safety gear and branded apparel by next year — building an all-in-one ecosystem for EV riders.

The Bigger Picture for India's EV Future

With its unique approach, Matter Motor is bridging the gap between performance-oriented riding and eco-friendly commuting. By aligning traditional motorcycle dynamics with cutting-edge EV tech, it is offering a compelling alternative to petrol bikes without alienating the core user base. Their focus on gear-based electric motorcycles, smart diagnostics, and pricing flexibility could spark a broader transformation in India's electric two-wheeler segment.

As the country looks toward cleaner mobility solutions, the success of such models will play a pivotal role in reshaping both buyer expectations and the future of Indian roads.
