New Toll Rule: Pay Digitally or Pay More from April 10

Highway travel in India is about to get a major upgrade. Starting April 10, cash payments at toll plazas will no longer be accepted. The move is aimed at making journeys faster, reducing long queues, and bringing a smoother driving experience for commuters across the country.

If you frequently travel on highways, here is everything you need to know about the new system and how it will affect you.

Digital Payments Take Over Toll Plazas

With the new rule in place, toll payments will now be completely digital on national highways. The most common and preferred method will be FASTag, which allows automatic deduction of toll charges without stopping your vehicle.

This shift is expected to significantly cut waiting time at toll booths and make traffic flow more efficient, especially during peak hours and holiday travel.

No FASTag? You Will Pay More

If your vehicle does not have a FASTag, you can still pay using digital methods like UPI. However, this comes at a higher cost.

You will be charged 1.25 times the regular toll fee, making it more expensive than using FASTag. In some cases, vehicles without valid payment methods may also face restrictions or be turned away, depending on the situation at the toll plaza.

Exemptions Now Go Digital Too

The government is also tightening rules around toll exemptions. Earlier, some users could show ID cards at toll booths to avoid paying charges.

Now, all eligible users must have a special Exempted FASTag to avail these benefits. This ensures better transparency and reduces misuse of exemptions.

Annual FASTag Pass Option

For regular highway users, there is an additional option. Private car owners can opt for an annual FASTag pass priced at ₹3,075.

This pass allows up to 200 toll crossings in a year, making it a cost-effective choice for frequent travellers who use highways often.

Penalties for Unpaid Toll Charges

Authorities are also introducing stricter rules for unpaid tolls. If a payment is missed, an electronic notice may be issued.

If the dues are not cleared within three days, the penalty can go up to twice the toll amount. This step is meant to encourage timely payments and ensure smooth functioning of the system.
