Tampering with Number Plates Can Land You in Serious Trouble
Trying to outsmart traffic systems by tampering with your vehicle’s number plate can cost you far more than a simple challan. What may seem like a clever trick to avoid fines can quickly turn into a serious legal issue. A recent case in Hyderabad highlighted just how advanced—and risky—these illegal methods have become. During a routine late-night check, police stopped a luxury car and discovered it had a remote-controlled system that could change its number plate within seconds.
With the increasing use of AI-powered traffic cameras across cities, detecting violations like speeding and signal jumping has become faster and more accurate. In response, some people are attempting illegal methods such as altering a single digit or letter on the plate, using fancy fonts or incorrect spacing, applying reflective sprays or films to confuse cameras, or even using someone else’s number plate.
Authorities have made it clear that such actions are not minor violations but serious crimes under the Motor Vehicles Act. Offenders can face heavy fines, vehicle seizure, and criminal charges. Even workshops or technicians involved in modifying number plates illegally can face strict action.
