Toyota has introduced mild-hybrid versions of its popular SUV, the Fortuner, and its sportier sibling, the Legender, in India. This marks a significant milestone in the brand’s journey towards electrification in the country. With prices starting at ₹44.72 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Fortuner Neo Drive 48V , and ₹50.09 lakh for the Legender Neo Drive 48V, the new variants are already open for bookings nationwide. Deliveries are expected to begin in the third week of June, ushering in a more efficient version of the beloved SUV.

48V Hybrid Tech Brings Efficiency to the Fortuner Line

Toyota has enhanced its flagship SUV with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, allowing drivers to benefit from improved fuel economy, smoother engine starts, and reduced emissions. The heart of the Fortuner Neo Drive remains its tried-and-tested 2.8-litre diesel engine, which continues to produce 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. However, the addition of a mild-hybrid system adds a new layer of sophistication.

The hybrid setup features a belt-integrated starter generator paired with a lithium-ion battery pack. This configuration assists the diesel engine at low speeds and enables features like auto start-stop and regenerative braking. Auto start-stop ensures the engine shuts off automatically during idle conditions, such as at traffic signals, helping conserve fuel. Meanwhile, regenerative braking allows the battery to recharge while slowing down, further optimising energy use.

Added Convenience with New Features

Though the exterior and interior design of the new Neo Drive variants remains largely unchanged, Toyota has introduced some much-needed feature upgrades to enhance the driving experience. Most notably, the vehicles are now equipped with a 360-degree panoramic camera, providing drivers with enhanced visibility in tight spots and urban environments.

Additionally, both the Fortuner and Legender Neo Drive variants receive a wireless smartphone charging pad, catering to the needs of tech-savvy customers. These updates improve convenience without altering the SUV’s rugged and premium aesthetic. A new ‘Neo Drive’ badge on the tailgate is the only visual cue distinguishing the mild-hybrid variants from their standard diesel counterparts.

A Broader Push Towards Electrification

The launch of these hybrid SUVs is part of Toyota’s broader strategy to electrify its model lineup in India. The Fortuner and Legender Neo Drive variants now join a growing family of electrified models, which already includes offerings like the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Glanza hybrid. This move signals Toyota’s commitment to low-emission mobility, even within the high-performance SUV segment.

India’s adoption of cleaner mobility solutions has accelerated in recent years, and manufacturers like Toyota are responding by bringing hybrid technologies to mainstream models. The decision to hybridise the Fortuner, one of the most popular full-size SUVs in the country, highlights a shift in market focus—balancing performance with sustainability.

Customer-Centric Appeal Remains Strong

Toyota’s decision to retain the familiar design and drivetrain while integrating modern hybrid enhancements seems tailored to Indian consumers who seek value, performance, and environmental consciousness without compromising on the vehicle's iconic look. By keeping the cosmetic appeal intact while embedding smart technology underneath, Toyota ensures the Fortuner’s enduring popularity continues with a greener edge.

Moreover, the hybrid system does not demand any behavioural change from the driver, unlike full EVs or plug-in hybrids. It simply works in the background to improve efficiency, making the transition seamless for those new to electrified powertrains.

Booking and Delivery Details

Bookings for the new Neo Drive Fortuner and Legender are currently open across Toyota dealerships in India. With deliveries expected to commence from the third week of June 2025, the company anticipates strong demand, particularly from urban customers looking for large SUVs with improved mileage and lower emissions.

Market Positioning and Outlook

With the Neo Drive variants, Toyota is not only refreshing the Fortuner’s appeal but also setting a precedent in the premium SUV market. By introducing hybrid technology into an already popular nameplate, Toyota is future-proofing the Fortuner while aligning with government regulations and consumer demand for cleaner vehicles.

As fuel prices and environmental concerns continue to shape buyer preferences, the introduction of mild-hybrid systems could become the new standard in this segment. For now, Toyota has taken a significant step forward with the Fortuner’s electrified evolution.
