Toyota is ready to switch gears in India’s electric car space. On January 20, the Japanese automaker will officially enter the electric passenger vehicle market with the launch of the Urban Cruiser EV, its first all-electric model for Indian buyers. The electric SUV will be produced in Gujarat and will serve both domestic customers and global markets.

Made in India, Built for the World

The Urban Cruiser EV is part of Toyota’s global EV strategy. While it will debut in India this month, the model is already being exported to select international markets, especially Europe, alongside the Maruti eVitara. The India-spec version is expected to remain largely identical to the export model, reinforcing India’s role as a key manufacturing hub.

Familiar Roots, Distinct Toyota Identity

Under the skin, the Urban Cruiser EV shares its platform and core mechanicals with the upcoming Maruti eVitara. However, Toyota will give the SUV its own design identity with brand-specific styling touches. Inside, buyers can expect a modern, tech-focused cabin featuring a two-spoke steering wheel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster. Safety will be a strong focus, with Level 2 ADAS expected to be part of the package.

Battery Options and Driving Range

Toyota is likely to offer two battery choices, 49 kWh and 61 kWh mirroring Maruti’s setup. The larger battery is expected to deliver a claimed range of up to 543 km on a single charge. Power will come from front-mounted electric motors producing around 144 hp and 174 hp, making it competitive on both performance and efficiency.

Entering a Crowded EV Battlefield

The Urban Cruiser EV will step into the fast-growing mid-size electric SUV segment, where competition is heating up quickly. Rivals include the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, MG ZS EV and the upcoming Tata Sierra EV, scheduled for launch later this year. Maruti’s own eVitara is also on the way, though its India launch date is yet to be confirmed.

With this launch, Toyota is finally plugging into India’s EV future and the Urban Cruiser EV could be a key piece of that journey.
