Aadhaar Update Charges Explained: Why UIDAI Is Charging Rs 200
A query raised on social media regarding Aadhaar update charges has prompted the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to issue a detailed clarification for citizens. The user, who did not disclose personal details such as name, address, or village, shared only the Aadhaar enrolment centre number and appealed for assistance. Responding promptly, UIDAI explained the official fee structure and update rules to clear confusion.
If you are planning to update your Aadhaar details or are unsure about the charges being asked at an enrolment centre, UIDAI’s clarification offers clear guidance.
UIDAI reiterated that enrolling for Aadhaar is completely free across the country. Charges are applicable only for updating specific demographic or biometric details, depending on the type of service requested and the age of the Aadhaar holder.
Mandatory biometric updates are free for certain age groups. UIDAI stated that biometric updates for children aged 7 to 15 years will remain free until September 30, 2026. In addition, mandatory biometric updates (photo, fingerprint and iris) are also free for children aged 5 to 7 years and 15 to 17 years.
However, when mandatory biometric updates are carried out for children aged 7 to 15 years and for individuals above 17 years, the applicable fee is Rs 125.
For biometric updates whether done independently or along with demographic updates the charge remains Rs 125.
UIDAI has fixed the cost for demographic updates, including one or more fields such as name, date of birth, or gender, at Rs 75, inclusive of all taxes.
Updating an address through the myAadhaar portal costs Rs 75, and the same fee applies for document updates carried out either online or at Aadhaar enrolment centres.
Aadhaar Search and Print Fees
For Aadhaar search services using E-KYC, Find Aadhaar or any other approved method, along with a colour A4 printout, UIDAI has set a fixed fee of Rs 40.
Free Online Document Updates Till 2026
To encourage digital services, UIDAI has made the document update facility on the myAadhaar portal free of charge until June 14, 2026. Citizens are advised to use the online portal whenever possible to save time and cost.
UIDAI Warns Against Overcharging
UIDAI has clearly warned citizens not to pay any amount beyond the prescribed charges. “We maintain a zero tolerance policy against corruption and procedural violations,” the authority stated.
If any enrolment centre demands extra payment, citizens can file a complaint through UIDAI’s official complaint portal and ensure strict action is taken.
