UPI Withdrawals Now Part of Free Limits

In a key update, HDFC Bank has announced that ATM cash withdrawals made using UPI will now be included in the monthly free transaction limit. Earlier, these cardless withdrawals were treated separately.

With the new rule in place, even UPI-based ATM withdrawals will count toward your free quota. This move is aimed at bringing uniformity across all types of cash withdrawals.

Charges After Free Transactions

Customers exceeding the free monthly limit will now have to pay Rs 23 per additional transaction, along with applicable taxes.

Currently, HDFC Bank offers:
  • 5 free transactions at its own ATMs
  • 3 free transactions at other bank ATMs in metro cities
  • 5 free transactions at other bank ATMs in non-metro areas
Once these limits are crossed, charges will apply, now including UPI withdrawals as well.

How UPI ATM Withdrawals Work

UPI-based ATM withdrawals are simple and cardless. Here’s how it works:
  • Scan the QR code displayed on the ATM
  • Authorize the transaction via your UPI app
  • Collect cash directly from the machine
This feature is gaining popularity as banks continue to blend digital convenience with traditional cash access.

PNB to Revise Daily Withdrawal Limits

Punjab National Bank has also announced updates effective April 1. The bank will revise daily cash withdrawal limits for certain debit card categories.

While exact limits are yet to be revealed, customers are advised to check with the bank to understand how these changes may impact their transactions.

What Customers Should Do

With these updates coming into force, bank users should:
  • Track their monthly ATM transactions carefully
  • Be aware that UPI withdrawals now count toward limits
  • Check revised daily withdrawal caps for their debit cards
  • Consider using digital payment methods like UPI or net banking for larger payments

The Bigger Picture

These changes reflect a broader push by banks to streamline ATM usage rules and promote transparency in charges. At the same time, they signal a shift toward encouraging digital transactions while keeping cash access convenient.
