Ayushman Yojana 2026: List of Diseases Not Covered - Check Before Availing Benefits
Ayushman Bharat Yojana has become a strong pillar of India’s public healthcare system, offering financial protection to millions of families. Known as the world’s largest government-funded health insurance scheme, it provides cashless treatment coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family every year at empanelled government and private hospitals across the country. Currently, around 12 crore families are benefiting from this initiative.
A major expansion of the scheme ensures that all Indian citizens aged 70 years and above are eligible for free treatment, regardless of income or social status. This step has greatly improved healthcare access for senior citizens.
However, while the scheme is extensive, it does not cover every type of medical expense. Understanding its limitations is important to avoid inconvenience during treatment.
OPD Treatments Are Not Covered
Ayushman Bharat does not cover outpatient department (OPD) treatments. If a disease or condition does not require hospital admission and treatment is limited to consultations or medicines through OPD, the expenses will not be reimbursed. The Ayushman card becomes valid only after the patient is admitted to a hospital. Discussions are ongoing about including OPD services in the future.
Diagnostic Tests Without Hospitalisation
Medical tests are covered only when they are part of an approved hospital treatment. Tests done before admission or after discharge are included only if they are linked to the hospitalised treatment package. If tests are conducted without hospital admission, their cost will not be covered under the scheme.
Vitamins and Health Supplements
General energy-boosting vitamins, tonics, and supplements purchased for wellness purposes are not covered. However, if such medicines are prescribed by a doctor as an essential part of treatment for an illness or injury, the cost may be included.
Dental Treatment Limitations
Routine dental care is not covered under Ayushman Bharat. Procedures such as fillings, scaling, or cosmetic dental work are excluded. However, dental or jaw-related treatments required due to accidents, injuries, tumors, cysts, or serious bone-related conditions are eligible for coverage.
IVF and Infertility Treatments
Ayushman Bharat does not cover IVF procedures or any form of infertility treatment. Assisted reproductive technologies are excluded from the scheme.
Other Treatments Not Covered
The scheme does not include preventive healthcare services such as vaccinations. Cosmetic and lifestyle-related procedures like anti-ageing surgeries, cosmetic surgery, nose jobs, neck lifts, laser tattoo removal, and obesity reduction surgeries are also excluded. In addition, treatments where patients are kept alive only through medical devices without curative intent are not covered.
Why Knowing These Exclusions Matters
Ayushman Bharat Yojana offers wide-ranging healthcare support, but being aware of what is not included helps beneficiaries plan better and avoid unexpected expenses. Understanding these key points ensures you can use your Ayushman card effectively when you need it the most.
