The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has taken a progressive step towards inclusivity by simplifying the process for updating personal details in EPF records . As per a recent circular, PF members can now use a Transgender Identity Certificate/Card issued via the national portal to request a name and gender change in EPFO records. This update makes the joint declaration process more accessible and transparent for members across India.

EPFO Simplifies Name and Gender Change Process


In its latest directive, EPFO confirmed that the Transgender Identity Certificate/Card issued through the National Portal for Transgender Persons will be treated as a valid document for modifying both name and gender details in EPF accounts.


The circular clearly states that this document has been officially added to the list of acceptable documents under the simplified joint declaration process, ensuring uniform implementation across all regional EPFO offices.

PF members holding a Transgender Identity Certificate or Card issued via the national portal can now use it as proof while submitting requests for correction or change of personal details. This move aligns EPFO processes with evolving identity documentation norms and reinforces equal access to social security benefits.

All EPFO regional offices have been instructed to acknowledge this update and process requests based on the revised documentation list without delays.

EPFO Name and Gender Change: List of 18 Accepted Documents



To help PF members understand the requirements clearly, here is the complete list of 18 documents accepted by EPFO for name and gender change in EPF records:


  1. Passport
  2. Death Certificate
  3. Birth Certificate
  4. Driving Licence
  5. Service photo identity card issued by Central/State/UT Government, PSU or Banks
  6. School Leaving Certificate (SLC), Transfer Certificate (TC), SSC certificate or mark sheet issued by a recognised board or university
  7. Bank passbook with photograph, cross-stamped by a bank official
  8. PAN Card or e-PAN
  9. Ration Card or PDS photo card
  10. Voter ID or e-Voter ID
  11. Pensioner Photo Card
  12. CGHS, ECHS, Medi-Claim Card with photo, or RSBY card issued by Central/State Government or PSU
  13. ST/SC/OBC certificate with photograph
  14. For full name or first name change: Gazette notification of the new name along with a supporting document showing the old name with photograph (mandatory even for the first change)
  15. Valid visa along with a valid foreign passport (for foreign nationals)
  16. Freedom Fighter Card with photograph
  17. Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Card or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card
  18. Tibetan Refugee Card
