Knowing your Provident Fund (PF) balance is essential for effective financial planning and monitoring retirement savings. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced several convenient ways for members to track their balances. From missed calls and SMS services to apps and web portals, there are multiple options for employees to stay informed. Even employees of exempted establishments have ways to keep track. Here’s a detailed guide on the different methods available to check your PF balance.

Checking PF Balance Through A Missed Call

One of the simplest ways to access your PF balance is by giving a missed call to 9966044425 from your mobile number registered with the Universal Account Number (UAN) portal. This free facility provides details of your last contribution and the current balance.

To use this service, ensure your mobile number is linked with UAN on the portal and that your UAN has one of the following KYC details updated: bank account number, Aadhaar, or PAN. The call automatically disconnects after two rings, and shortly after, you will receive the required information.

Checking PF Balance Via SMS

EPFO also allows members to check their PF balance by sending an SMS to 7738299899. The SMS must be sent from the UAN-linked mobile number in the format: EPFOHO UAN. If you want the response in a regional language, you can add a language code along with your UAN.

This service is available in ten languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, and Malayalam. The reply includes details of the latest PF contribution, total balance, and KYC updates.

Using The UMANG App For PF Balance

Technology has made it easier than ever to track PF balances with the government-backed UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app. Available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, the app provides comprehensive access to EPFO services .

After installing the app, log in with your UAN and link it to the system. Once linked, you can view your PF balance, monitor contributions, and even raise withdrawal or transfer claims. The app also allows a quick glance at pension account transactions over the last three months, with detailed statements available for download in PDF format.

Checking PF Balance On The EPFO Website

For those who prefer using a desktop or laptop, the official EPFO website provides a straightforward way to check balances. Visit epfindia.gov.in and navigate to the 'Services for Employees' section, followed by 'Member Passbook.'

Log in using your UAN and registered password. The portal gives a detailed view of monthly contributions, employer share, and the accumulated balance. This option is especially useful for keeping track of long-term contributions and verifying employer compliance.

How Employees Of Exempted Establishments Can Check PF Balance

Employees working with exempted establishments cannot use the standard EPFO services since their PF accounts are managed independently by their employers. In such cases, the balance can be checked through alternative methods such as salary slips, the organisation’s internal HR or employee portal, or by directly contacting the HR department.

While this system is separate from EPFO, employees are still entitled to updates about their contributions and balances, and organisations usually provide this information in regular payslips or annual statements.

Why Regularly Checking PF Balance Matters

Keeping track of your PF balance is more than just about knowing how much you’ve saved. It helps in verifying timely employer contributions, identifying errors or delays, and ensuring accurate record-keeping for future retirement benefits. With multiple convenient options available, employees can choose the method that best suits them to stay financially informed.
