Free LPG Cylinder on Holi: State Government Rolls Out Festive Benefit
Good news for Delhi’s economically weaker families ahead of the festive season. The Delhi government has announced that free LPG gas cylinders will be provided to eligible households during Holi and Diwali, offering much-needed relief from rising kitchen expenses.
Decision Taken by Delhi Cabinet
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently approved this major welfare decision. The cabinet has cleared a plan to provide one free LPG cylinder per family twice a year, once on Holi and once on Diwali. To implement the scheme, the government has earmarked a budget of around ₹300 crore.BJP’s Poll Promise Comes to Life
The move fulfills a key BJP election promise made to support poor families during festivals. As the government completes its first year in power, it has decided to roll out the scheme starting this Holi. This means festive cooking will be a little easier for thousands of households this season.Who Will Get the Benefit?
The scheme is aimed at economically weaker sections in Delhi. Families holding valid ration cards under the Public Distribution System will be eligible. At present, around 17.18 lakh ration card holders are expected to benefit in the first phase. Beneficiaries have been identified using the existing ration card database, and the verification process has already been completed. No Extra Paperwork Needed
Families whose details are correctly registered in the ration card system will not need to apply separately. The focus is on households for whom the cost of a gas cylinder is a major monthly burden. The scheme is expected to bring direct and immediate relief to these families. How Will Free Cylinders Be Given?
Instead of home delivery, the Delhi government will use the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) method. During Holi and Diwali, around ₹850, the cost of one LPG cylinder, will be transferred directly to the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of beneficiaries. Families can then purchase cylinders from their nearest gas agency. What’s Next?
This system, already in use in states like Uttar Pradesh, aims to reduce middlemen and ensure transparency. The first transfer is expected around Holi, ensuring that along with festive colours, there’s relief from kitchen worries too.Next Story
