Have Two UANs? Here’s How to Fix It Online Without Any Hassle

If you’ve changed jobs even once, chances are you already have a PF account. For frequent job switchers, this becomes even more important. What many employees don’t realize is that job changes can sometimes lead to multiple UANs being created in their name. It may sound harmless at first, but having more than one UAN can seriously delay or block PF transfers and withdrawals.

The EPFO clearly follows the rule of “One Member, One UAN”, meaning a single UAN should remain valid throughout your entire career. Still, due to system gaps or employer-level mistakes, thousands of employees end up with two or more active UANs. The good news? This issue is completely fixable, and 100% online.

Why do people end up with two UANs?

The most common reason is simple: not sharing your old UAN details with your new employer. When HR doesn’t get your previous PF information, they generate a fresh UAN. In some cases, the fault isn’t yours at all. If your previous employer fails to update your exit date, the EPFO system assumes you’re still employed there, prompting the new company to create another UAN.

Either way, there’s no need to panic. EPFO allows members to merge multiple UANs into one active account.

How to merge two UANs online

EPFO has made the process smooth and user-friendly. Here’s how you can do it:
  • Visit unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in and log in using your UAN and password.
  • Go to Online Services and select “One Member - One EPF Account”.
  • Check and confirm your personal details and KYC information carefully.
  • Choose your current employer for attestation, as approvals are usually faster.
  • Enter your old PF Member ID or UAN and click Get Details.
  • Verify the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Accept the declaration and submit the request.
Once submitted, your employer will verify and process the request. After approval, your old UAN will be merged into the active one, ensuring smooth PF management going forward.

Multiple UANs can quietly create big problems later, but fixing them is easy if you act in time. A few minutes online can save you from PF transfer delays and withdrawal headaches in the future. If you’ve ever switched jobs, checking your UAN status today is a smart move.
