Reducing Financial Burden in Health Emergencies

The Finance Minister emphasized that the government aims to ease the financial stress on families during medical emergencies, trauma care, and mental health treatments, especially for the poor and vulnerable.

NIMHANS 2.0 and Mental Health Upgrades

A landmark announcement was NIMHANS 2.0, a national mental health institute to be set up in North India, he first of its kind in the region. Existing mental health centers in Ranchi and Tezpur will be upgraded to regional hubs. District hospitals will see a 50% expansion in emergency and trauma care capacity, including dedicated trauma centers to improve patient care and reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

Cheaper Cancer Medicines and Rare Disease Relief

Budget 2026 offers major relief to cancer patients with the removal of customs duty on 17 cancer drugs. Seven additional rare diseases will also benefit from duty exemptions on imported medicines and special medical foods, making treatment more affordable.

Strengthening Ayurveda and Traditional Medicine

The budget highlights Ayurveda’s rising global demand post-COVID. Three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda will be set up, boosting medicinal plant cultivation and farmer incomes. Key facilities like the AYUSH pharmacy, drug testing labs, and the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar will be upgraded to enhance quality and skill development.


Biopharma as an Economic Pillar

Healthcare is being positioned as a key driver of economic growth. Budget 2026 encourages domestic drug manufacturing, research, and technology. The Ayushman Bharat scheme allocation rises to ₹9,406 crore, benefiting the elderly, ASHA and Anganwadi workers, and gig workers. The overall health budget continues its upward trend, signaling India’s commitment to modern, accessible, and affordable healthcare.
